  • Missing Kevin Don

Kevin is the host that got me into this podcast. His episodes were unique, speckled with personal experience, and with a deep connection to humanity, critical thought, and philosophy. The “Best of” episodes airing now are, with all due respect, dull and painfully basic, delivered with the character of a child reading from flash cards; they are too-simple snippets of advice that ask nothing of the audience and are the equivalent of fast fashion for the ears: trendy and easily found anywhere, but ... more

  • Concise and precise

New to the podcast! My favorite line from the host in the episode defining fitness was (paraphrasing), “I know some of our listeners don’t like Latin words, or words in general, but…sarcopenia.” LOL I’m here for all the words Latin and otherwise. And I appreciate the short format.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The first principle of strength training
Q: Hey Kevin, can you please suggest workouts, drills or routines on how to improve basketball fitness?
The guidance is to pair a well-rounded strength program with sport-specific accessories like targeted sprint work, jumps, and directional changes to reflect actual basketball demands, rather than relying on generic long-distance conditioning.
Listener emails: How many indoor bike workouts to do in a week, and advice on resting while lifting (Reissue)
Q: Can we talk about rest while lifting? If my goal is to be efficient and also maximize gains in hypertrophy and strength, what kind of rest should I be giving myself?
Rest should be individualized: heavier, low-rep work requires longer rest for performance, while higher-rep work can tolerate shorter rests. The episode recommends structuring A/B/C training with heavy low-rep workouts and submaximal higher-rep work, and emphasizes resting long enough to allow for quality sets, rather than forcing a fixed 90 seconds.
Listener emails: How many indoor bike workouts to do in a week, and advice on resting while lifting (Reissue)
Q: Here's my question. How much time doing an indoor bike workout and how many times a week is the right amount?
The host explains that the right amount is the intercept between enjoyment, adaptation, and recovery, recommending you stay above the minimum effective dose and below the maximum recoverable dose, adjusting based on how you feel and recover. The idea is to find a sustainable frequency that supports consistency and progress without causing excessive fatigue.
Socioeconomic factors in fitness (Reissue)
Q: How do socioeconomic factors impact participation in sports?
Economic barriers limit access to certain sports and fitness activities, resulting in disparities based on income levels.
Escaping the "metrics trap" in fitness (Reissue)
Q: How do I know when I've recovered adequately to get back to doing my disciplines?
You should look at biomarkers of physical exertion to know when you're fully recovered.
