  • Not sure who this podcast is for

The analysis of the papers is pretty unsophisticated, e.g., slipping into causal language with studies not designed to determine causality. The practice advice is pretty general conventional wisdom stuff. Despite being short, still not worth the time.

  • Great but interviews can be irksome

Great short content that’s applicable to daily practice. Lately, one NP has massive vocal fry and the other stutters and stops her sentences so frequently that it can impede listening.

  • Helpful but would like to hear from physician experts

Generally find these podcasts helpful and appreciate them. Rather than seeing NP and PAs presenting medicine topics, would love to see physicians specialists discuss subject matter in detail.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Under the Skin: Stress, Inflammation, and the Mortality Gap - Frankly Speaking Ep 482
Q: What can we do to better identify patients who are disproportionately influenced and injured by this chronic stress, and what role do inflammatory markers play in clarifying that assessment?
Identify patients through attentive listening and social determinants screening, use structured tools like PREPARE, and rely on referrals and resources rather than relying on CRP/IL-6 as screening tests due to their limited specificity; use ESR/CRP when inflammatory conditions are suspected rather than as general stress markers.
Does Treating Depression Worsen Dementia? - Frankly Speaking Ep 474
Q: What are the appropriate treatments for patients with depression who also have dementia?
Treatments should start with non-pharmacologic approaches when possible (physical activity, reminiscence therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, sensory stimulation) and use pharmacologic options cautiously (SSRIs/SNRIs) with attention to interactions and dose. If depression worsens or symptoms require pharmacotherapy, consider tapering or switching antidepressants and reassessing non-pharmacologic options.
Meningitis Makes a Comeback (Along with Other Infections) - Frankly Speaking Vaccine Update
Q: What about the implications of changes to the Hepatitis A and B schedules?
Changes involve increased understanding of transmission risks, particularly for Hepatitis B during birth, highlighting the importance of universal health care for prevention.
Meningitis Makes a Comeback (Along with Other Infections) - Frankly Speaking Vaccine Update
Q: Tell us more about the impact of these changes, specifically around RSV vaccination?
The CDC recommends RSV vaccination for high-risk groups, noting that RSV is a significant cause of hospitalization and death in children.
Meningitis Makes a Comeback (Along with Other Infections) - Frankly Speaking Vaccine Update
Q: What do you make of the new CDC guidelines on childhood immunizations?
The CDC has reduced the recommended vaccinations due to concerns about over-vaccination compared to peer nations, affecting vaccines for several diseases.
