Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Relationscapes: “How Dogs Domesticated Humans,” with Laura Hobgood
Q: What ethical concerns accompany breeding, cloning, and the rise of purebred dogs?
Breeding for extreme traits narrows the gene pool and can lead to health problems; cloning raises questions about identity and welfare, while mass breeding (puppy mills) highlights concerns about the treatment of animals and the ethics of profit over well-being.
Relationscapes: “How Dogs Domesticated Humans,” with Laura Hobgood
Q: How do archaeological finds like co-burials and cave footprints inform our understanding of early dog-human relationships?
Co-interments and paired footprints in caves show a long history of emotional and possibly spiritual connections, suggesting dogs were valued companions and played meaningful roles even in the earliest human societies.
Relationscapes: “How Dogs Domesticated Humans,” with Laura Hobgood
Q: What sparked the idea that dogs and humans became partners rather than predator and prey?
The discussion points to a gradual mutual adaptation where humans provided food scraps and protection while dogs helped with hunting and guarding; this reciprocal relationship strengthened over generations and became foundational to both species' evolution.
Relationscapes - MINI EPISODE: “What a Good Boy,” with Steven Page
Q: What were the origins of What a Good Boy and how did it come together emotionally for you?
The song spilled out in a way that felt inevitable, with the middle section coming together through collaboration with Ed Robertson, and the chorus reflecting the idea that born into a gendered expectation, one can still question and push against those norms.
Relationscapes: “Recovering Queer Black History for Everybody,” with George M. Johnson
Q: What was the hardest thing about writing your book?
As a writer, you wish you had all the information. But part of writing is the discovery process, and if I knew all of these things, would I have ever written the book?
