  • No Propoganda, Please

Good content. Every time climate change is said, credibility and fact die a little. Enough with the propaganda. Where are the 'papers' on climate change? How does the incongruity of the climate change mantra and most recent So Cal fires (wettest preceding 12 months in years) rectify? Climate is guaranteed to change. Always has--always will. Models and epidemiological studies are poor science. Repeating something does not make it true. That is the definition of propaganda.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 96: Fire history and tree invasion in an Ozark glade, barrens, and woodland complex
Q: What was special about the methods used in this study?
The study stands out for its integration of fire history using fire scars with the timing of tree invasion within glades, allowing researchers to directly connect historical fire regimes to subsequent woody encroachment.
Episode 95: Prescribed fire drives divergent invasive annual grass responses in a dry forest-mosaic landscape
Q: Why did the results show ventanada decreased in some burned areas, contrary to expectations based on its behavior elsewhere?
The relatively open canopies in those burned forest openings likely limited ventanada establishment, suggesting that maintaining some canopy during burns can mitigate invasion in certain contexts.
Episode 95: Prescribed fire drives divergent invasive annual grass responses in a dry forest-mosaic landscape
Q: Could you describe in detail how you set up plots and tracked interactions between invasive grasses and canopy with respect to burn treatment?
We established line point intercept transects across treated and control plots, monitoring species composition, canopy cover, and interactions to compare burned versus unburned areas over a multi-year timeline, enabling us to see how invasives respond to prescribed burns.
Episode 94: The state of the giant sequoias: losses, risks, and opportunities
Q: Why did you want to write this paper, Linnea?
The paper grew out of years of discussion following major fires in 2020 and 2021, with the aim of understanding current losses, future risks, and how to move forward through collaboration via the Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition, to guide management actions and prioritize treatments.
Episode 93: Epiphytic lichens as ladder fuels: an experimental study on flammability in Southern Chile
Q: Korina, can you tell us a little about the study and what it's about?
The study investigates how epiphytic lichens, which cover a portion of forest surfaces, behave as ladder fuels, with authors explaining that these organisms can ignite easily and contribute to vertical fire spread, particularly in temperate forests of southern South America.

A notable thread is the collaboration between academics, federal agencies, and NGOs to connect rigorous science with on-the-ground decisions, from prescribed fire planning to wilderness fire policies. The format often features expert guests who break down complex methodologies and highlight real-world applications, making it helpful for professionals evaluating research for... more
