  • Great production and interesting content

I have no experience with the farm environment or the farming process but I really enjoyed this podcast. I learned a lot and had no idea about the well known dangers that exist on a farm. This podcast is a great tool for educating people about all of these issues. I’m excited to hear more stories.

Pilot Spotlight – Safety Conversations between Farm Parents and Youth
Q: Anna what motivated your research project that examines safety cultures in family farms?
I worked with family farmers in southeastern Iowa, focusing on parent farmers with adolescents who work on the farm, to understand safety perceptions, decision-making, and the dynamics of supervision in family-owned operations.
Rabies Safety in the Midwest
Q: How should farms respond to possible exposures?
Report to local public health departments for risk assessment and potential rabies shots, with testing of the animal when possible to avoid costly treatment for people.
Rabies Safety in the Midwest
Q: What are the main prevention methods for agritourism facilities?
Vaccinate domestic animals, implement strong biosecurity (including covered garbage cans and separation from wildlife), and actively mitigate wildlife habitats like bat colonies to reduce encounters.
Rabies Safety in the Midwest
Q: What kind of animals are at the highest risk of carrying rabies?
Most concern in the Midwest centers on bats, skunks, raccoons, and foxes, with bats often linked to human cases, while larger wild animals pose higher exposure risk if they interact with people or domestic animals.
