  • Weekly listen

This is an excellent podcast hosted by Matthew.

I was inspired by Matthew at FIBO two years ago, watching him on the floor working out with his trainers. He lives what he sells, which I think is rare now days.

His speakers bring value to the audience and most recently some of the advice has help me decide the direction I have started with my newest studio.

I tune in every week to listen

Thank you for the great content.

LIFTS Episode 131 – Inside Athletech New York: The Biggest Ideas Shaping Fitness LIFTS LIVE in New York
Q: What makes Athletech New York a unique convergence point for fitness, wellness, and tech?
It's a hub where gym operators, wellness innovators, and tech platforms mingle, highlighting how data, wearables, and new service models (like recovery-focused offerings and health-tracking) can be integrated inside fitness spaces to drive retention and cross-promotions.
LIFTS Episode 128 - One PhD. 5.5M Members | Retention Science That Could Change the Industry | with Dr. Paul Bedford
Q: You've spent 20 years arguing that when members leave, it's not purely their fault—how should operators rethink retention given the proliferation of fitness options?
Operators should focus on making every member interaction meaningful, onboarding to reduce anxiety, and recognizing that members will engage with multiple experiences. Rather than forcing exclusivity, they should cultivate loyalty by supporting the member's broader lifestyle and choices.

Q: How important is franchising versus corporate ownership in driving value?
Franchising can bring premium valuations due to the asset-like growth and reduced corporate risk, but it requires heavy upfront investment in systems and governance to scale the franchise network effectively.
LIFTS Episode 129 - Wall Street's Fitness Investment Playbook: What Builds Value & What Kills Deals | with Aarti Kapoor
Q: What should founders prioritize to attract investment in a multi-unit fitness concept?
Maintain clean, apples-to-apples financial data; demonstrate portability across markets; build a capable management bench; and show a plan to de-risk the model through solid franchise or corporate structure.
