Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

175. Dhiraj Mukherjee: Co-founder of Shazam on the board lessons from an 18-year journey to a $400m exit
Q: What advice would you give a founder about governance and choosing the right board dynamics?
Seek investors and board members who challenge you with tough questions, bring practical experience in scaling tech, and can balance optimism with realism; ensure communication lands and that the board environment supports gradual but decisive pivots when markets demand it.
175. Dhiraj Mukherjee: Co-founder of Shazam on the board lessons from an 18-year journey to a $400m exit
Q: How did the board influence your pricing strategy and the move from a consumer to a B2B focus?
The board pushed us to consider viable business models beyond the consumer text-based revenue, and the threat of bankruptcy pushed us to explore a B2B avenue where our robust music-identification algorithm could be licensed to partners, ultimately diversifying and stabilizing revenue.
175. Dhiraj Mukherjee: Co-founder of Shazam on the board lessons from an 18-year journey to a $400m exit
Q: You've been on an amazing journey as a co-founder of Shazam. What were the three most challenging board-level discussions you faced?
There were many, but key moments included whether to destroy or defend revenues during a shift to a free model, deciding to sell our tech to a third party to keep the business alive, and the early decision about investing in a projector which surprisingly unlocked our fundraising momentum and set the stage for our next two years.
174. Sir John Kingman: Why boards need more misfits - lessons from the financial crisis
Q: How can a board better prepare for a crisis to avoid groupthink and ensure robust decision-making?
Fostering a diverse set of viewpoints, encouraging 'misfits' who think differently, and implementing processes like reverse stress testing and continuous challenge outside of formal meetings help prevent groupthink and improve resilience.
173. Andy Higginson: Laura Ashley's near collapse, Tesco's legendary strategy and turning round Morrisons
Q: What were the three moments in your executive career where the board shaped an organization's trajectory, positively or negatively?
The Laura Ashley refinancing and cash focus set a precedent for disciplined liquidity management and a critical shift in board dynamics; Tesco's four-pillar strategy defined growth directions for many years, while the Morrisons turnaround showed the importance of staying true to the brand and core customer focus even when leadership changed.
