  • Very insightful and a great listen!

Ollie is incredibly inquisitive and I never fail to learn something new, whether that’s from his way with words or his sheer intelligence and business savvy advice… his exotic mono skiing technique not so much but that’s not as important when it comes to business podcasts. 11/10 don’t miss out!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

167. Claire Bassett: What you need to know before joining a public sector board
Q: What three things would you recommend a board member dig into in a discussion with a prospective CEO?
First, ensure your personal values align with the organization's purpose and the service they provide; second, review the board's agenda and understand what drives priorities by looking at board minutes and what has been discussed; third, assess recruitment decisions and the team composition to gauge where priorities actually sit and how leadership energy is allocated.
166. Simon Calver: From LoveFilm to Mothercare: The board behaviours that make and break companies
Q: What is the lesson in practical terms for a board member from the Mothercare turnaround when the plan needs to change quickly?
Be decisive and brave; identify and revisit key assumptions, pivot when necessary, and ensure the board creates an environment where big issues can be discussed openly and quickly adjust strategy.
166. Simon Calver: From LoveFilm to Mothercare: The board behaviours that make and break companies
Q: Three great moments there. Can I go back to the Reed Hastings comment? So what was the board involvement in that? You come back from this session drinking a couple of bottles of wine with Reed Hastings and you walk into the boardroom and you say, look, I think we've got to do a merger with our biggest competitor. How did that work in practice? And what was the message that you took to your counterpart at LoveFilm?
Calver explains that initial board tensions were present, but with constructive challenge and joint advisors, the plan was formed and gained bipartisan support, including preparing for alternative options and a merger with their biggest competitor as a strategic move.
168. Peter Norris: Leading through crisis: Barings Bank and Virgin Atlantic's Covid fight for survival
Q: Lightning Round: best book every board member should read and why?
He recommends Boonbrooks as a slightly facetious but insightful pick for understanding family business dynamics.
165. Rachel Carrell: What founders need from their boards
Q: What is the most valuable board ritual?
A shared Google Sheet and Google Doc with the full pack sent in advance, so questions can be raised ahead of time and the agenda can be adjusted to focus on the weightier strategic topics.
