  • False advertising

I purchased a book through a link provided by Tan by Shelley Fairbairn. At multiple points throughout the episode a manipulative (or older poster/chart) was referenced as being included with the purchase by both Tan and the authors of the book. I purchased the book and it did not come with either. As a new ML teacher, I was anticipating this easy reference chart/ manipulative. Tan’s email on his website is not functioning so no way to contact him to rectify this. The podcasts themselves are hit ... more

  • Ep 157 Street Data

Tan Huynh hosts a great podcast here. On the show are the authors of Street Data: Shane Sadie and Jamila Dugan. Their message is authentic and super impactful: our most valuable source of data in our schools is human experience. Period. Schools using “numbers and obtuse quantitative data without context… do not reflect the truth.” Tan leads the discussion in such a way that the message is engaging and undeniably real. I absolutely lit up when the authors encourage us to “listen with radical inc... more

Integrated Literacy for Experienced MLs w/ Beth Skelton & Tan
Q: What is the difference between social development language and academic language?
Academic language is the formal, discourse-level language used in professional and academic settings, while social development language is everyday, conversational language; both are needed, but academic language requires explicit instruction and structured practice to reach the level used in disciplines like science and history.
216. Teaching phonics with pop-its
Q: What makes this approach particularly effective for multilingual learners?
By combining multisensory engagement, explicit instruction, and a clear link between pictures, letters, sounds, and words, the method supports diverse linguistic backgrounds, builds confidence through repeated success, and helps students transfer phonics knowledge into reading fluency and comprehension.
216. Teaching phonics with pop-its
Q: How do you integrate this tool with other reading programs and classroom formats?
The tool is designed to be versatile: it can be used in small groups, as a whole-class activity, or one-on-one, and it complements existing programs like UFLI by providing explicit, multisensory practice that reinforces phonemic awareness, decoding, and word-sound relationships.
216. Teaching phonics with pop-its
Q: Can you share a specific story about a student who benefited from using the poppets?
A student who had previously struggled to focus managed to stay engaged for a full nineteen minutes when using the poppet-based activity, illustrating the tool's ability to capture attention and drive meaningful reading practice.
Ep 214: Dr. Anne Paonessa - Essential Connection Skills
Q: Can you define service learning?
Service learning is providing an opportunity for students to identify a problem within their community and explore solutions through collaborative efforts, all tied back to learning standards.
