Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 3
Q: Can you provide guidance on how to select which targets to address first in treatment?
It's better to start with the intrusive flash-forward as safety is the primary concern for suicidal patients, rather than focusing solely on past traumas.
Episode 3
Q: How can clinicians discuss the topic of intrusive suicidal images with their patients?
Clinicians should adopt a matter-of-fact approach, asking straightforward questions to normalize the discussion around intrusive suicidal thoughts and images, helping patients feel understood.
Episode 3
Q: How did you come to this paper?
In 2014, we started to use flash-forwards based on earlier studies, which opened up possibilities for EMDR in treating suicidal images through focusing on mental representations of future catastrophic events.
Episode 3
Q: Could you give our listeners a brief background to what led to your interests and involvement in the topic of suicidal intrusions and this recently published paper?
I have always been deeply interested in understanding why people take their own lives and felt that neither I nor the field fully understood the mechanism of suicide, which led to a focus on the role of worrying as a driver toward suicide.
