Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

History of Nigeria’s Ethnic Tensions: One Nation, Many Divides
Q: Can you explain the federal character principle and its impact on Nigerian governance and ethnic relations?
The federal character principle was intended to ensure representation from all states and groups in federal institutions, but over time it evolved into a de facto quota system that institutionalized ethnic and regional balancing, sometimes exacerbating tensions by tying political advancement to identity rather than merit.
History of Nigeria’s Ethnic Tensions: One Nation, Many Divides
Q: As we look at the historical context you've outlined, how did colonial rule specifically shape ethnic identities in ways that mattered for post-independence politics?
Colonial rule formalized and, in many cases, rigidified preexisting social divisions by administratively separating communities, codifying laws by ethnicity and religion, and relying on indirect rule through local intermediaries, which laid the groundwork for how identities would matter politically long after independence.
Expat Adventures in Nigeria: Corporate Warfare (Part 1)
Q: You mention the culture shift and the role of media and education in Nigeria's transformation. How did the influx of Western culture and education shapes the middle class and business environment?
Keith discusses aspirational middle-class growth, the influence of American media, and educational migration that reshaped consumer aspirations and urban development, including a divide between Lagos island elites and mainland communities.
Expat Adventures in Nigeria: Corporate Warfare (Part 1)
Q: And it's just got tons of great insights about Nigeria. So for the benefit of those who haven't read the book, could you just please share how you first came into contact with Nigeria?
Keith explains starting with Crown Agents in the early 1980s, being sent to Nigeria to manage state debt, and how those early witnessing trips became the baptism of fire for his long Nigerian career.
Yoruba History: The Rise and Fall of the Oyo Empire
Q: What caused the empire to collapse and what followed after the capital fell?
A combination of internal factionalism (Bashurun versus Alaafin), a coup by Afonja with the help of Alimi, and external pressure from the Sokoto Caliphate and Dahomey disrupted Oyo's cohesion; the capital's destruction led to a long, brutal period of fragmentation and wars that redrew Yoruba political geography and fed the slave trade.
