La Virgen María se apareció al indio Juan Diego en el cerro del Tepeyac y le mandó que le dijese al obispo de México, fray Juan de Zumárraga, que le erigiera un templo.
Los españoles se presentaron a conquistar México-Tenochtitlán trayendo muchas imágenes de la virgen María. Los indígenas en los primeros años de la conquista cuestionaron fuertemente la nueva religión.
