  • Brilliant

As someone with dementia in my family, I really related to this podcast. There are so few resources out there and this podcast contains so much useful information, but also takes a lightheartedly approach to a difficult topic.

  • Amazing

I have just listened to the introductory episode and laughed and cried in equal measure. Can’t wait to listen to the rest. Joanna and Anna have incredible chemistry and they spoke of experiences I have sadly had with my own family. I am going to share this with everyone I can. If you have parents, or you are simply getting older yourself - I think this is going to be an essential podcast for many: navigating a disease that affects so many of us. Bravo.

How to Reduce Your Risk of Dementia with Dr Tommy Wood
Q: What practical steps should listeners take first to reduce risk?
Start with one achievable change that resonates—such as increasing physical activity, improving sleep, or engaging in cognitively stimulating activities—and gradually build on it, as small, sustained changes can compound over time.
How to Reduce Your Risk of Dementia with Dr Tommy Wood
Q: How strong is the evidence that 45 percent of dementia cases are preventable?
The Lancet Commission's estimate is based on analyses of multiple risk factors and their contributions to dementia risk; it may undercount certain factors like sleep quality and late-life cognitive activity, and the exact percentage varies by methodology, but it signals substantial modifiable potential.
How to Reduce Your Risk of Dementia with Dr Tommy Wood
Q: What do we actually mean by dementia prevention on an individual level vs. population level?
Prevention at the population level aims to reduce overall disease burden; for individuals, we focus on lowering absolute risk through multiple lifestyle changes, knowing that we can't guarantee a dementia-free outcome but can meaningfully reduce risk.
Alcohol & Dementia: What the Science Really Says with Professor David Nutt
Q: Is there a safe level of drinking for long-term brain health?
The safe level is highly individual, but population-level guidelines suggest lower intakes reduce risk; heavy drinking markedly increases risk, and even within guidelines there are vulnerabilities, such as genetic factors and sex-based differences.
Alcohol & Dementia: What the Science Really Says with Professor David Nutt
Q: Is alcohol-related dementia the same as other dementias or a distinct condition?
It's both: there is a linear relationship between drinking amount and brain shrinkage, suggesting a shared pathway with other dementias, plus specific damage from vitamin deficiency and head injuries that can accelerate dementia-like symptoms.
