The relationship began with intense curiosity and cultural differences, but within about two months I realized he had an addiction and I felt compelled to rescue him, which started a highly enmeshed, codependent dynamic that escalated into extraordinary turmoil including legal troubles and a long spell of emotional and logistical caretaking.
