  • Great content, terrible sound.

These guys have great insights and stories. Genuinely interesting fellas. But please sort the sound out. Levels are all over the shop and one sounds like they are in an echo chamber. Can barely hear it sometimes on full volume. Just buy a cheap blue yeti and run it through a levelator. Sorted

Grassroots Venues, Headliner Hopes and Being Cancelled… Q&A #21
Q: How important are grassroots venues to you and what are your favourite memories in a grassroots venue?
Grassroots venues are described as the lifeblood of live music, providing the first stages for many bands and shaping the intimate, sweaty, up-close concert memories that promoters and fans prize most. They reminisce about first gigs in small rooms like Cat House, Barfly, and Lomax, and explain how those spaces foster community, discovery, and the nurturing of artists who later headline larger festivals.
New Neurosis, Wildhearts Wishes & Ripcord Revelries
Q: Daniel Hay asks: Do you have any artists where you love a single album but the rest of their output is not as strong, affecting how you rate the band overall?
James and Gav discuss Foo Fighters' Colour and the Shape as a rare standout among a broader catalog, with a nod to Wildhearts and System of a Down as examples where a single album defines their appreciation, while acknowledging genre-wide fluctuations in quality.
Being Biffy Clyro’s Tour Manager (with Neil Anderson)
Q: What is a tour manager, and what is their role?
A tour manager coordinates routing, logistics, budgets, and on-the-ground execution, ensuring every element from buses to hotels to guest lists aligns with the plan and that costs stay in check while avoiding surprising overages.
It's Tree Time
Q: What was the strategy around exclusivity for Primus and other headliners?
James explains that exclusivity is pricey and not always feasible; he often negotiates the best possible deal by prioritizing overall festival revenue and press impact, sometimes accepting non-exclusive arrangements when the numbers make sense. He emphasizes transparency about the deal structure and cautions against promising exclusive status unless it's financially justifiable for both parties.
The Music Press Fight Back Part One (with Remfry Dedman)
Q: How important is a PR company? Are you more likely to view something because it came from a company you trust?
For me personally, no. I have often covered bands not represented by PR. However, having PR can help in getting into major publications.
