Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Theology, Ethics, and a Church in Conflict: A Conversation with Amy Carr and Christine Helmer (Rerun)
Q: Tell us a little more about orthodoxy and heresy in the current context.
The guests explain that orthodoxy can crystallize through listening to competing insights and that labeling dissent as heresy should be qualified by recognizing the historical nuance of how beliefs developed; they advocate viewing heresy as a choosing to engage with others rather than rejecting them, which can support a more inclusive ecclesial conversation.
Aramaic Jesus: Tradition, Identity, and Christianity's Mother Tongue: A Discussion with Bruce Chilton
Q: Is there anything else you'd like our listeners to know about your book and what you hope they take away?
The book is language-centered and demanding, but it aims to make Aramaic accessible by presenting Aramaic text alongside transliterations with vowels, helping readers understand how Aramaic contributes to interpreting Gospel texts and the human dimension of how tradition is curated.
Aramaic Jesus: Tradition, Identity, and Christianity's Mother Tongue: A Discussion with Bruce Chilton
Q: Yes, it's such an excellent read. And for our listeners, could you begin by telling them briefly what your book is about?
The book investigates how Jesus is reflected through Aramaic traditions in the Gospels, focusing on literal Aramaic words in the Greek New Testament, interruptions in Greek grammar that can be illuminated by Aramaic, and themes in Jesus' teachings echoed in Aramaic literature.
Negotiating Jewishness: Paul's Ethnicity Between Continuity and Discontinuity: A Discussion with Ruben A. Bühner
Q: So to begin our time together, could you just situate your book in kind of time and space? Where is Paul? What is the context here for our listeners?
Ruben explains the framing of Paul within Second Temple Judaism, stressing that Paul lived in a diverse diaspora context where ethnicity mattered and where Jewish life intersected with Greco-Roman culture, making his Jewishness a dynamic and contextual construct.
Madness, Theocracy, and Anarchism: A Discussion with Barry Harvey
Q: Could you give our listeners a brief overview of the book and its core ideas?
Harvey outlines the triptych of madness, theocracy, and anarchism to argue that the church should not confine itself to private or religious spheres but should embody a distinct social order guided by Christ, often challenging dominant secular powers and cultural norms.
