  • So one-sided and disappointing

To start, I’m a female OB provider who works with a large group of pro-life female OB providers.

Listeners should be made aware of the unrepresented pro-life provider AND the patient seeking obstetrical care from someone who believes their child is a human being. People should know there is NOT consensus on abortion among clinicians despite how podcasts and “experts” like this try to make it seem. Know that there are pro-life doctors who care for baby and mom equally as human beings and patient... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Behind the Knife: Intraoperative and Postoperative Wound Complications
Q: How would you start evaluating a patient with incisional pain, erythema, and serosanguineous drainage on postoperative day five?
Obtain a focused history for fever and drainage characteristics, perform a thorough exam of the incision for erythema, tenderness, drainage, and separation, and palpate for fluctuance or crepitus; use ultrasound if exam is equivocal to assess for seroma, hematoma, or abscess.
Outlawed: The Pregnancy Police State
Q: Can you provide practical tips for healthcare providers on when and how to involve law enforcement in pregnancy-related cases?
Providers should assess legal obligations first, clarify HIPAA exceptions, determine if they are required to call, and carefully consider the potential impact on the patient before involving police, prioritizing patient care and privacy.
Reprise - Episode 183: Perinatal Mental Health
Q: How should a clinician respond if a patient screens positive for self-harm thoughts?
Take it seriously but assess ideation, plan, and intent to determine risk; not all positive self-harm screens require emergency evaluation, but high-risk scenarios need rapid psychiatric consultation and safety planning.
Reprise - Episode 183: Perinatal Mental Health
Q: What should OBs screen for, and when should screening occur?
Screen for depression and anxiety using validated tools (PHQ-9/EPDS for depression, GAD-7 for anxiety) at least once in pregnancy and again postpartum; also screen for bipolar disorder to guide treatment decisions and avoid inappropriate antidepressant use.
Reprise - Episode 183: Perinatal Mental Health
Q: Why is addressing mental health in the perinatal period important?
Because it's one of the most common pregnancy complications with significant downstream effects on mother, baby, and family; early recognition and integrated care can prevent adverse outcomes, including preterm birth and bonding issues, and even maternal mortality.
