In addition to threading the extremely difficult needle of deeply dissecting beloved media without ruining their effect (if anything, adding new layers of enjoyment), I will be eternally grateful for this podcast introducing me to the marvel that is The Fallen Idol.
I love Three Bean Salad and grew up loving the Goon Show so I looked forward to hearing Mike Wozniak talk about the Goon Show. Instead I listened to Mike Wozniak listening to the host talk about the Goon Show.
A host that connects meaning and history and nuance without ever sounding twee, conversations that are so much more meaningful than “what’s your favorite…”, and edits and audio references that are perfection, so even if you’re not familiar with the guest’s topic you can still be fully engaged.
This podcast would be way better if Joel Morris knew when to shut his cakehole and let the interviewee get a word in.
I now listen to try and gauge the exact moment when each guest just decides to give up and grunt monosyllabic agreement to the endless stream of thought they are subjected to.
The two takeaways I have are that:
1. - If Mitch Benn ever gets on this podcast, the ensuing recording will outlast religion.
2. - Julia Raeside deserves a medal the size of a dustbin lid.
