Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

284 - Staci Haines: Creating a World of “Power-With”
Q: What does it mean to 'power with' in practice, versus simply advocating for change?
Power with means coordinating and sharing power across people and institutions to achieve common goals, aligning personal longing with collective needs, and engaging in social change through compassionate, embodied leadership rather than domination.
284 - Staci Haines: Creating a World of “Power-With”
Q: Could you say something about somatics' role in service of large-scale change?
Somatics helps people hold complexity without polarizing, align inner states with outer actions, and cultivate capacity for compassion, discernment, and resilient leadership in the face of social upheaval.
290 - Marvin Oka: Decision-Making in Complexity
Q: Can you explain the meta-language concept and how it helps in transforming mental models during decision making?
Meta-language is a way to talk about language itself; it helps participants surface underlying mental models, paradigms, and beliefs. By using paradigm metaphors and structured dialogue, teams can identify core assumptions, reframe problems, and create generative feedback loops that enable emergence rather than prescribe a fixed solution.
290 - Marvin Oka: Decision-Making in Complexity
Q: What practical steps can a leader take to align the inner and outer work when making decisions in chaos?
Start with autonomic coherence and gather input from the three brains (head, heart, gut). Align values with actions through a meta-language that translates values into tangible behaviors, test options with quick iterations, and ensure the group environment supports experimentation and emergent leadership.
290 - Marvin Oka: Decision-Making in Complexity
Q: How would you view decision making in a complex environment, and where would you start in coaching leaders through it?
Begin by recognizing that decision making is not a single thing; you must distinguish between technical decisions and adaptive decisions, involve stakeholders, and start with the nature of the decision. Use group sense-making to map the system, then apply short feedback loops and design actions that can be tested and iterated.
