  • Disappointed

I listened to this daily because of the thoughtful voices behind it (Nikki and Eva Ruth in particular). Hearing about their termination due to change in CityCast direction caused me to immediately unsubscribe. Eager to support them on whatever comes next.

What You Don’t Know About Austin’s Trees
Q: How does TreeFolks measure success beyond simply planting trees?
Success is measured through canopy cover, species diversity, tree health, and long-term carbon credit generation, with monitoring across a seven-county region to track growth and impact.
What You Don’t Know About Austin’s Trees
Q: What kinds of programs is TreeFolks running to increase tree canopy?
Programs like Neighbor Woods with Austin Energy provide free trees, Seeds to Trees grows trees in a native nursery for large-scale planting, and reforestation efforts cover public and private lands, with extensive volunteer involvement.
What You Don’t Know About Austin’s Trees
Q: Why is ash juniper a focal point in the conversation about trees here?
Ash juniper is native and plays a key role in habitat for species like the golden-cheeked warbler; removing too many of these trees could cause erosion and degrade soil stability, so management should be selective rather than indiscriminate.
What You Don’t Know About Austin’s Trees
Q: What does the canopy percentage mean for Austin's climate and livability?
The canopy percentage reflects shade, temperature moderation, wildlife habitat, and air quality benefits; 41% is a positive step, but a city-wide goal of 50% by 2050 requires continued investment and targeted efforts to address disparities, especially in the east.
Is Austin Really a Blues City?
Q: How has the blues scene in Austin evolved for younger players?
There's more exposure through festivals, film, and media that highlight blues roots, and mentorship through local venues helps younger players develop its storytelling aspect alongside performance chops.
