  • Fantastic Resource

Anyone leading, singing or interested in choral music should make this a part of their regular podcast rotation. Topics range from the practical (e.g. vocal pedagogy, teaching sight reading) to the philosophical (choirs and diversity/equity, how we interact with our colleagues online and what we value in our ensembles). Both inspirational and helpful!

  • The missing piece

This podcast was the piece I didn’t know I was missing as a choral director. It’s caused me to reevaluate every aspect of my job and create new definitions of excellence for myself and my students. I have benefited equally from the practical ideas and the philosophical ideas. I’m so grateful to have found someone willing to question everything and challenge our field to do better - with ideas from a wide range of “experts” on how to do just that.

  • Refreshing

This podcast is both inspiring and challenging. Chris doesn’t shy away from difficult conversations or topics to highlight both effective and ineffective mindsets and techniques in the choral profession overall. This podcast never fails to deliver a challenge to continue growing in our craft, and constantly encourages us to seek out ways to reflect and refine our teaching practices.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 243: Seeing With Sound with Re Robinson
Q: So how do you negotiate that when you're looking at a piece of performance repertoire that's more than one part?
I use braille music and practice tracks, memorize the parts to be prepared, and I also utilize audio tracks to learn, along with friends for score study.
Episode 243: Seeing With Sound with Re Robinson
Q: But what was the choir student experience like for you? Did you do braille music ever? Did you learn 100 percent by ear? Talk us through how that evolution happened.
I did multiple choirs in high school. In the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, we learned primarily by ear, while in the Jacksonville Children's Chorus, I taught myself how to read braille music.
Episode 241: Instrumental and Vocal Music United! With John Hinkle and Chops Podcast
Q: How does music literacy differ between band and choir?
In band, literacy skills are often emphasized more explicitly, while in choir, there is sometimes debate on how much independence is expected from students in reading music.
Episode 241: Instrumental and Vocal Music United! With John Hinkle and Chops Podcast

The Chops Podcast aims to provide insights into music education, focusing on band but making it relevant to a wider audience, including other educators.
Episode 237: The Must Haves in Your Conducting Tool Box with Richard Sparks
Q: What does it take to make a great conductor?
It's a combination of really good ears, the ability to dig deep into a score, understand what the composer is trying to say, and the ability to interpret.
