Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Humanities: My Voice (Episode 5)
Q: How has this experience changed your approach to patient care and communication?
She emphasizes personalizing care, listening to patients' instincts, reducing power dynamics by inviting family participation, and ensuring clinicians advocate fearlessly for their patients.
Humanities: My Voice (Episode 5)
Q: Tell us about the moment you realized you needed to advocate for yourself when facing treatment.
She describes recognizing the urgency of treatment and choosing to pursue a biopsy and surgery rather than a wait-and-see approach, driven by personal experience and concern for her patients' outcomes.
Exacerbation Risk by Chronic Proton Pump Inhibitor Use in Obstructive Lung Diseases
Q: What were the main findings regarding risk and dose response?
PPI use was associated with a 16 percent higher risk of exacerbations, and there was a clear dose-response pattern with increasing risk from low to daily exposure, including an additional increase when co-prescribed with CYP2C19 inhibitors.
Exacerbation Risk by Chronic Proton Pump Inhibitor Use in Obstructive Lung Diseases
Q: Can you give a brief overview of your study design?
We used a nationwide observational cohort of chronic inhaler users from 2017 to 2021, compared PPI users to non-users, excluded those with contraindications or H2 antagonists, and examined cumulative PPI exposure with four exposure categories to assess dose-response.
Exacerbation Risk by Chronic Proton Pump Inhibitor Use in Obstructive Lung Diseases
Q: So what prompted you to specifically research this question?
We noted PPIs are widely prescribed and often used long-term in patients with obstructive airway diseases, and prior literature on PPIs and exacerbation risk was inconsistent. We designed a nationwide observational study to assess whether chronic PPI use is associated with exacerbation risk and whether a dose-response pattern exists.
