  • Excellent Series on Business Aspects around the Beverage Industry

Very informative, topical and “user friendly” podcast series about the business aspects surrounding the current landscape of the wine, spirits and non-alcoholic beverage world. I just listened to the episode with Aly Wente (of Wente Vineyards, California) which was excellent (and I think will be of interest to producers in any region). Looking forward to future episodes!

119: Mid-Year M&A Update: The Deals Reshaping Drinks with Matt Rice - Business of Drinks
Q: What should an angel investor consider for a nine-year horizon in wine vs. new-to-world brands?
Investors should focus on where the puck is going, not just what's growing in the last 52 weeks; Wine 2.0 appears to be the big long-term bet while recognizing that RTD and THC channels are hot in the near term.
119: Mid-Year M&A Update: The Deals Reshaping Drinks with Matt Rice - Business of Drinks
Q: Are the largest and fastest growing brands being snapped up more quickly right now?
Yes. The window is closing fast for independent brands; deal flow has accelerated and buyers are moving quickly to secure growth vehicles, reducing the number of viable options over a short span.
117: The Control State Playbook For Bev-Alc Brands With Ashley Glickman - Business of Drinks
Q: What should brands prioritize when presenting to a control board?
Key elements include a tight category fit, a strong in-market support plan, data-backed velocity and marketing plans, broker support, and a clear ask for sale and shelf placement.
117: The Control State Playbook For Bev-Alc Brands With Ashley Glickman - Business of Drinks
Q: What are the three major jurisdiction types for control states and how do they differ from open states?
She explains retail, agency, and wholesale models, with Pennsylvania as an example of a retail state, Ohio as an agency state, and Michigan as a wholesale state, highlighting how ownership of stores and product affects route-to-market and expansion strategies.
117: The Control State Playbook For Bev-Alc Brands With Ashley Glickman - Business of Drinks
Q: So let's start out with your background. Tell me about how you came to work in Control States.
Ashley describes starting in experiential marketing, moving through broker and supplier roles, and ultimately gaining board-level exposure across all 17 control states which informed her understanding of legalities, broker relationships, and distribution approaches.
