  • Honest Conversations

Laura is incredibly welcoming and genuine. She listens intently and creates space for conversations that flow naturally and meaningfully. As a fellow breast cancer survivor, it felt less like an interview and more like talking with a friend who truly understands. A comforting, thoughtful, and deeply connecting experience.

  • Caregivers Should Listen

This podcast is fabulous. Unfortunately my BF has been diagnosed and there was no question I would be there for her every step of the way. I HIGHLY recommend caregivers listen to the podcast. It will help you understand and be even more empathetic with the diagnosis.

I myself am a nurse but have no experience with Oncology. This podcast has really helped me understand and point me in the right direction for further answers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

298. The Truth About Cold Capping During Chemo
Q: What was the process of cold capping like, and how did your nurses or Pacman team connect you with the caps?
Her oncologist explained the Paxman system, a nurse helped fit and teach the cap, her husband assisted with applying conditioner and handling the cap, and the process included an hour before chemotherapy and 90 minutes after, lengthening the appointment to about four hours.
298. The Truth About Cold Capping During Chemo
Q: Would you like to introduce yourself, where you're calling from, and maybe a little bit about your experience with breast cancer?
Jen Fernandez describes her initial early-stage diagnosis near Boston in 2020, her first experience with chemotherapy and hair loss, and then a later local recurrence in 2023 where she chose to try cold capping to preserve hair.
296. Inside Oligometastatic Breast Cancer: Kacie Flaherty and Joyce Dini on Treatment, Grief, and Joy
Q: How has oligometastatic disease presented itself differently in terms of treatment lines compared to typical metastatic disease?
Initially the plan involved aggressive treatment with curative intent, followed by maintenance therapy. As the disease course evolved, certain targeted therapies and hormone treatments became appropriate, and insurance coverage expanded to include these options, allowing longer-term management and flexibility in treatment lines.
296. Inside Oligometastatic Breast Cancer: Kacie Flaherty and Joyce Dini on Treatment, Grief, and Joy
Q: Kacie, you mentioned really early on, your doctor was presenting you with a clinical trial option as a first line. Can you tell me a little bit about why perhaps that was presented first?
The trial option was an investigator-initiated approach at the university, but insurance denied participation. Later, through the tumor board, a curative-intent option was considered, recognizing that ongoing treatment would still be needed.
294. Two Years on Verzenio: Side Effects, Brain Fog, and Why I'm Glad I Did It | Jen Tipton
Q: What changes did you notice after completing the two-year Verzenio course?
Energy and mental clarity returned significantly; she felt more like herself again and found that stopping the drug also reduced the constant reminders of cancer in daily life.
