  • Awful audio quality

This podcast is fast becoming unlistenable. The hosts’ and guests’ audio is so distorted and over-compressed, and awash with awful digital noise that it makes for very uncomfortable listening first thing in the morning. The pre-recorded outro and Bloomberg subscription ad don’t suffer from this, so there must be something very wrong with the audio setup used in the studios.

  • Yesterday’s news

I subscribe to bloomberg.com and know the company somewhat. So I’m regularly dismayed at how old and dated this podcast is regularly. It often amounts to a rehash of other outlets headlines. It could be so much more.

$150 Oil Now Possible, Solar Eclipse Power Shift, Bankers Leaving London
Q: What does the data from Robert Walters show about jobs moving out of London?
Robert Walters projects roughly 90,000 jobs shifting to Manchester, the Midlands, and the North over five years, driven by high living costs in London and firms relocating to regional centers; senior managers may stay, but junior staff are more likely to move.
Daybreak Weekend: US CPI, Europe Energy, RBA Decision
Q: Great to see you on the weekend. Ed, thanks for coming in. So what's the risk that price pressures pick up in July?
The risk is not what the market currently discounts; core inflation remains elevated, suggesting the disinflationary trend has stalled and may even reverse, prompting the Fed to remain wary of policy paths.
HSBC's $1 Billion Reward, Darkness Falls Across Asia, Big AI Bets Divide Funds
Q: How is AI investing reshaping venture capital according to the episode?
The trend is toward concentration of exits and capital with top-tier AI investors, making it harder for smaller funds to raise money unless they can demonstrate strong returns or exits, especially given the scale needed for AI-related investments.
HSBC's $1 Billion Reward, Darkness Falls Across Asia, Big AI Bets Divide Funds
Q: What did HSBC's management emphasize about the bank's strategy and capital allocation?
They underscored ongoing cost savings, asset sales, and a stronger balance sheet, with a renewed buyback and confidence in growth momentum, while prioritizing dividends and organic expansion within risk limits.
Daybreak Weekend: US Jobs, European Earnings, Vietnam Eco
Q: What could the July US payrolls report imply for Fed policy?
A softer jobs print could reinforce the idea that the Fed will maintain a cautious stance on inflation, while surprises in the data could sway expectations about the timing of rate adjustments, especially if the labor market shows resilience or weakness in the context of ongoing inflation concerns.
