  • Disappointing

After a while of listening regularly, I’m finding too many of these serve as just an advertisement marketing the guest’s current employer, new book, or project. It has great promise, but unfortunately too many feature guests saying the same things, e.g. our program does it best, staffing is our biggest challenge, tech use will substantially increase & we’ll use it better than others (doing more for more people with less cost yet higher quality), diversity is a good thing, etc.

New Treatments and a Turning Point in Fatty Liver Disease Care with Dr. Meena Bansal
Q: What does the landscape look like for patients with more advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis?
She notes that current approvals target stage 2-3 fibrosis and that emerging data suggest potential reversal or improvement in early cirrhosis, indicating a moving toward therapies that could alter the disease course for patients previously considered less alterable.
New Treatments and a Turning Point in Fatty Liver Disease Care with Dr. Meena Bansal
Q: Could you dig a little bit deeper in that?
Dr. Bansal explains that there are two FDA-approved therapies for fatty liver disease: resmetarol (resdifera) as a THR-beta agonist that restores liver thyroid signaling to burn fat and reduce scarring, and sumaglutide (Wigobi), a GLP-1 receptor agonist that primarily promotes weight loss and improves insulin sensitivity, with the expectation of expanding options as more therapies become available.
Stacey Conklin, CNO of Montefiore Nyack Hospital
Q: How does governance influence AI adoption at a smaller hospital within a larger health system?
Stacey explains that governance at Montefiore Nyack is set by the health system but adapted locally, with site executives weighing in on what's most important and a governance group directing investment based on those priorities.
Eliminating Nitrous Oxide and Advancing Sustainable Care in the OR with Dr. Arash Motamed
Q: What are the ongoing lessons or opportunities you see for other hospitals looking to pursue similar sustainability initiatives?
Education remains the biggest opportunity—engaging both clinical and administrative sides is crucial. Once clinicians see the impact and participate in the process, momentum builds, and projects naturally proliferate, extending beyond nitrous oxide to broader waste reduction, energy, and water-use improvements.
Eliminating Nitrous Oxide and Advancing Sustainable Care in the OR with Dr. Arash Motamed
Q: How did you build a credible business and clinical case to get hospital leadership and frontline physicians aligned?
I leveraged a collaborative approach, starting with a survey of about 20 influential departmental members to see if nitrous oxide was essential. The results showed it wasn't, which allowed us to propose removing the central pipeline entirely or keeping it only as a backup. We supplemented this with education, Grand Rounds, and a clear pathway for implementation, ultimately gaining broad buy-in by showing how the change could reduce waste and costs without compromising patient safety.
