  • On my saved list

Got into BY Ultras last year. This podcast is mentioned in “There is no finish” by Stephen Parker, and I’m really pleased I found it. I don’t know the interviewer, but he has a great style, and really digs down in his questioning to get the best out of his guests.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Phil Gore - Project 168
Q: How will spectators participate without altering the run?
Spectators can book time slots to run a lap with Phil, donate to Telethon to participate, and crew will manage timing and safety without acting as pacers or giving material assistance.
Phil Gore - Project 168
Q: When did you decide to structure this as a solo backyard ultra with seven days as the goal?
The idea grew gradually after prior solo attempts and conversations with the running community; after Biggs, the feedback and curiosity from others helped solidify the plan and the seven-day target as a meaningful, audacious milestone.
Merlin Gammon - This is Your Life
Q: How has the journey been different this time around compared to the early cross-country journey?
Merlin explains that the journey has become more of a lifestyle with better physical conditioning and a more resilient mindset, reducing injuries and enabling longer routines, while the West Coast and Nullarbor segments feel tougher due to isolation and fewer towns.
Sam Christie
Q: What was your preparation like for Dead Cow Gully?
It involved a coach, structured sleep loading, caffeine withdrawal, sleep strategies, and careful crew planning to optimize pacing and rest.
Sam Christie
Q: What inspired you to start running ultras?
A documentary about the Barclay Marathons, especially Gary Robbins and the Where Dreams Go to Die, lit the spark to try an ultra and work up to longer distances.
