  • The only podcast I seek out consistently

The discussion with Prof. Sean Wilentz on 10/26/25 distills perfectly the monstrosity we are dealing with in very clear terms and the more people who understand it, the better we will be able to overcome this moment in history.

  • Ian Masters's Background Briefing: A show that stands apart from any other.

As essential as any other number one news and analysis resource, this program remains at the very top of my list. A part of my daily routine, I credit Mr Masters with providing us with a detailed picture of our current affairs through a, almost daily, series of wildly diverse and highly credentialed guest interviews. I could never thank the staff of Background Briefing enough for taking me through this very difficult decade. If I ever hit the jackpot, you will know it. thank you for all of your ... more

  • Often the guests have very on point analysis and commentary. This can't be said of all guests. Some seem as clueless as the relatively uninformed may be. Many are also cagey, unwilling to state ugly realities, unlike Ian.

This is definitely a podcast for the left leaning given Ian's tendency to insert his own left leaning opinions into discussion. So some right wingers and "centrists" may not like it. However, Ian still has excellent editorial standards (like keeping to the facts) nonetheless.

  • Good guests, I wish Ian did more interviewing and less pushing his own thesis.

April 26, 2026 - Bill Scher | Peter Loge | Toby Miller
Q: What does the discussion suggest about the role of press events like the White House Correspondents' Dinner in democratic life?
The hosts and guests acknowledge the dinner as a longstanding journalism institution that can foster dialogue and humor, but also critique how power dynamics and media consolidation can undermine its original purpose by turning it into a stage for elite interests.
April 26, 2026 - Bill Scher | Peter Loge | Toby Miller
Q: What are the two fronts of the White House's strategy regarding the assassin and anti-media framing, and how effective is it?
Bill Scher discusses how the administration attempts to frame the issue by tying political hate speech to Democratic rhetoric while downplaying violence, while critics argue this is a dangerous distortion that glamorizes or normalizes political violence.
April 26, 2026 - Bill Scher | Peter Loge | Toby Miller
Q: So given your experience, Peter, how do you rate Trump, and how does his approach shape the media narrative?
Peter Loge explains that Trump's approach leverages reality-TV style messaging, rapid shifts, and a flair for dramatic announcements that destabilize conventional political narratives, making it hard for traditional media to anchor coverage and forcing re-interviews as the situation evolves.
April 26, 2026 - Adele Stan | Matthew Petti | Alfred McCoy
Q: What happened at the White House Correspondents' Dinner and how did it influence perceptions of media and politics?
The discussion emphasizes that the event highlighted concerns about media ownership, editorial independence, and how political power interacts with tabloids and corporate media, shaping public perception and trust.
April 14, 2026 - Daniel Immerwahr | Jamie Martin | Maziar Behrooz
Q: What explains the shift in American posture toward Iran, as reflected by the so-called Trump doctrine?
The guests suggest it reflects a move toward selective, target-focused strategy that avoids broad, multilateral constraints, potentially undermining the credibility of long-standing diplomatic norms and making durable peace agreements harder to reach.
