Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

I'm Reevaluating My Retirement Plan, What Are My Options?
Q: What should I consider about suspending Social Security and delaying until age 70?
Suspending allows you to stop benefits temporarily while continuing to work and earn delayed retirement credits, which increases your eventual monthly benefit when you restart at age 70; you can suspend only up to the month you turn 70 and you may also withdraw and reapply to time a March 2027 start if that better fits your plan.
If Either Of Us Die, Will The Other Get Survivor Benefits?
Q: Dear Rusty, I am 79 and my husband is also 79, and we both received Social Security Benefits. We were both married before, and we married each other at the age of 58. Am I to understand correctly that when either of us dies, the surviving spouse is not eligible to collect the deceased spouse's Social Security benefits?
The surviving spouse receives only one benefit, either their own retirement amount or their deceased spouse's amount, whichever is higher, and the survivor's benefit may replace any smaller ongoing benefit; there is also a one-time $255 death benefit and options to claim survivor benefits from an ex-spouse if applicable, but not more than one survivor benefit at a time.
I'm Still Working, Why Didn't I Get a Higher Social Security Benefit?
Q: Why isn't my higher income from working after I started benefits increasing my monthly benefit?
Because the monthly benefit is calculated from the highest 35 years of inflation-adjusted earnings, not from ongoing earnings after benefits begin; to trigger an increase, current earnings must replace one of those 35 years in the calculation, and you should verify your lifetime earnings history and use SSA's tools to confirm whether an adjustment is due.
Must I Set Up A Social Security Account To Enroll In Medicare?
Q: Do I need to set up a Social Security account before applying for Medicare if I just turned 65?
It is not required to have a My Social Security account to enroll in Medicare, but having the account speeds up processes and enables online enrollment for Medicare, as well as other SSA tasks; you may also enroll by phone if you prefer.
When Will I Get Full Credit for Delaying My Social Security Retirement?
Q: Now, today's question comes to us from someone planning to switch from survivor benefits to his Social Security retirement benefit at age 70, but he wonders if he will get his full benefit right away.
The host explains that if benefits start in the month the claimant turns 70, all delayed retirement credits earned up to that point are paid immediately, resulting in the full age-70 benefit with the first retirement payment.
