Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

They’re Trying to Erase Black History. We’re Not Letting Them.
Q: What would you say to young people who are growing up in a state where their education is being increasingly censored? How would you ensure that your students could become more aware of that censorship or the truth?
I would want them to recognize that education occurs outside of the school context as well, with opportunities to access a wealth of information online and through community engagement, underscoring the importance of autonomy in their learning.
They’re Trying to Erase Black History. We’re Not Letting Them.
Q: How would you say that the assumption that if I do all the right things, everything will work out for me, how as a poet or as a writer do you find yourself having to shake that in people?
It's important to recognize that hard work and grit matter, but we also have to understand the historical context that influences different outcomes for individuals. Not everyone starts from the same place due to systemic inequalities.
When the People Rise
Q: How is activism characterized in this episode?
Activism is seen as an intentional disruption against oppression, requiring collective action rather than being a solo effort.
When the People Rise
Q: Can you unpack the idea of voting behavior being a form of resistance?
Voting behavior is a deeply organized process and reflects a choice made by communities regarding representation and agenda.
When the People Rise
Q: What does resistance mean for you?
For me, resistance involves challenging the status quo in various ways and using knowledge to create change.
