Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Health System Leaders Can Build a Healthier Clinical Workforce: Lessons from Nemours Children’s Health
Q: What are the early wins or signs of progress so far?
Early wins include executive-level buy-in, a shift in focus toward behavioral health, successful rollout of Schwartz Rounds and peer-support initiatives, and tangible engagement and regional buy-in that demonstrate movement toward the Healthiest Workforce goals.
How Health System Leaders Can Build a Healthier Clinical Workforce: Lessons from Nemours Children’s Health
Q: How did you define the seven domains and ensure they connected to measurable outcomes?
The domains were defined through collaboration led by the Chief People Officer, aligning physical, emotional, financial, workplace, social, environmental, and purpose/community aspects. Metrics were carved to map to these domains, enabling quarterly reviews and linking programs like biometric screening and behavioral health to the desired workforce health outcomes.
How Health System Leaders Can Build a Healthier Clinical Workforce: Lessons from Nemours Children’s Health
Q: Can you tell me where that idea came from and how you got started on this journey?
The initiative stemmed from a CEO-driven vision to create the healthiest workforce, with a phased rollout starting in 2023 and formalized in 2024. It emphasized seven domains and began with defining strategy, then building leadership buy-in and a cross-functional approach to implement and measure progress.
How Recognition Helps Reduce Physician Burnout
Q: What does it mean for physicians to truly feel valued?
Feeling valued goes beyond treating patients—it means recognizing physicians as whole people with distinct needs, which in turn supports better patient care and personal well-being, and it is strongly linked to lower burnout and lower intent to leave.
REPLAY: The Importance of Integrated Care
Q: After you started practice, can you tell us an experience that illustrates the benefits of an integrated approach to patient care?
Dr. Cooley described several cases where integrating behavioral health with primary care revealed misattributed diagnoses, led to more effective treatment plans, and helped coordinate care across specialties, demonstrating that a patient-centered, collaborative approach improves outcomes.
