  • Must Listen

It’s a great show all around. Every episode they get off on tangents about their lives, non-financial topics, etc. and they’ll usually apologize, but that’s what makes the show great. It’s great financial advice, education, mixed in with humor and normal people. Somehow they’ve pulled off making a finance podcast interesting and worth listening to. One that you’ll get legit value out of, and is able to pull you in to tune in every week.

Excellent podcast. Entertainimg, informative. Retirement planning and personal finance advice. I do not understand the 1 and 2 star ratings. Cannot imagine what those listeners found that is better than Scott and Pat.

  • Don’t waste your time.

Sadly, this podcast has gone downhill. It’s nothing but repeats. The banter between Scott and Pat is new and fresh, but the calls are repeats. Very disappointing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

$3M+ Retirement: Long-Term Care, Early Inheritances & The "3 C's" Strategy
Q: What is the three Cs strategy and how does it apply to this client's situation?
The three Cs are concentration, charity, and conversions. Concentration addresses a highly weighted stock position; charity leverages donor-advised funds to efficiently give and manage tax deductions; conversions use the extra room in tax brackets created by the fund to run Roth conversions with less tax impact.
AI Investing Insights & Strategies for RSUs and Roth Conversions
Q: How should a high-income investor approach overall market exposure given all-time highs in AI stocks?
Exposure should be tailored to personal circumstances, with a formal financial plan; avoid overconcentration in AI by maintaining a diversified mix and considering rebalancing to keep allocations aligned with risk tolerance.
Multi-Million Dollar Retirement: Roth Conversions & Estate Planning
Q: Where should bonds and cash be held for tax efficiency?
Bonds and cash should be kept inside the IRA, while tax-efficient equities belong in the brokerage. This arrangement reduces ordinary income tax on distributions and improves overall tax efficiency.
Multi-Million Dollar Retirement: Roth Conversions & Estate Planning
Q: Should Dan continue to Roth convert given his near-term income and estate goals?
Yes, the panel suggested 18-month to 24-month Roth conversion strategy, focusing on aligning the conversions with the estate plan to leave more to family, while considering income tax implications and RMDs.
$10M Retirement: The Tax Mistake High Earners Make
Q: What is the first step to minimize future taxes in retirement given a large IRA balance and expected RMDs?
Start with a Roth conversion plan, prioritizing converting enough each year to keep taxable income in a favorable bracket, while avoiding plans that trigger higher Medicare premiums or unfavorable tax rates; coordinate this with a long-term projection to see the impact across 20 years.
