  • Always something to glean

I’ve been listening to the 40+ Fitness Podcasts for a few years. I appreciate that the general theme of the podcast is straight forward, practical, and doable advice. Even when there are topics I think may not interest me I manage to glean a beneficial tip or just have a seed planted for a new way of thinking.

  • Love the podcast… pls fix the volume thing ☹️

Love the podcast. Lots and lots of great advice. Also love the three strategies at the end of every episode. But pls fix the volume of your recording. I listen to the podcast when I’m riding bicycle. E697 was really impossible to hear your voice.

    Thanks for what you do.

Q&A - Motivation, Functional Fitness, Power, and Supplements with Coach Allan
Q: Where does supplementation fit into a long-term health plan and how do you determine needs?
Supplement decisions should be individualized based on blood tests and dietary intake, focusing on correcting deficiencies (e.g., vitamin D in low sunlight areas, B12 for vegans, magnesium, zinc, iodine). Avoid mega-dosing or “just-in-case” supplementation and monitor body response and recovery, using testing to guide adjustments.
Q&A - Motivation, Functional Fitness, Power, and Supplements with Coach Allan
Q: I kayak regularly. For a full upper body workout, what additional exercises should I do after kayaking?
Kayaking provides stamina and back endurance but is not a comprehensive strength workout. A full resistance program focusing on push, pull, and carries should be incorporated at least twice a week, with attention to leg work and overall balance, ideally scheduling resistance training on days you're not kayaking.
Q&A - Motivation, Functional Fitness, Power, and Supplements with Coach Allan
Q: Maintaining power as we age—why is it important and how can we gain it?
Power stems from combining strength and speed, and should be trained dynamically through methods like plyometrics, Olympic lifts, sled work, and kettlebell movements. A periodized approach is recommended: 8–12 weeks of strength work, followed by 4–6 weeks focused on power, with careful attention to form and safety given age and recovery considerations.
Q&A - Motivation, Functional Fitness, Power, and Supplements with Coach Allan
Q: What are the best basic functional fitness exercises for someone who's in their early sixties?
The host emphasizes choosing movements you can perform consistently and safely, including squats, hip hinges, push and pull movements, carries, and a focus on achieving stamina. The idea is to build a well-rounded, functional base with regular practice of core patterns while respecting recovery and individual capability.
Fall prevention, vitality, and longevity with Dr. Jacques MoraMarco and Dr. Yun Kim
Q: What are three strategies or tactics to get and stay well? (Dr. Mora-Marco's turn)
Dr. Mora-Marco stresses mind intent or Rigpa, cultivating positive thinking; building a supportive community; and integrating movement, nutrition, and mindfulness as a personalized, age-appropriate wellness plan.
