If they did any research on the company at all, they would know that customers have been screwed over by Josh’s inept vapor ware! No one who has used Gusto has anything nice to say. If you want to learn how to screw over customers by building a non-functioning product that is non-compliant... more

Rob Heyvaert, Motive Partners Founder: Investing Billions to Build the Future of Finance
Q: How do you decide which opportunities to back and when to pass?
You back teams with extreme conviction and the ability to reinvent processes holistically, not just improve one component. You must balance patience with urgency and be willing to walk away if the right moment or the right alignment isn't there, while maintaining a long-term view on value creation.
Rob Heyvaert, Motive Partners Founder: Investing Billions to Build the Future of Finance
Q: What led you to start Motive after Capco and your other ventures?
A conviction that the industry needed an operator with conviction about where wealth management and payments are headed, combined with a belief in rebuilding infrastructure to support scale. Build a multi-product platform from the start, leveraging componentized architecture to share code and data, and target adjacencies in both products and customers to minimize execution risk while maximizing cross-sell opportunities.
Renaud Laplanche on Building Upgrade to a $7.3Bn Giant, Reinventing the Credit Card, and Shipping AI-Native Products

Be prepared to live your life a quarter at a time; maintain a balance betweening earnings reporting and long-term company-building, communicate clearly with employees, and focus on fundamentals rather than chasing stock price volatility.

Q: How does Sequoia decide which investments to pursue per partner per year?
