徐世勣生于西元五九四年，正直隋朝中期；十七歲，農民起義，徐世勣加入翟讓的瓦崗軍。李密殺翟讓，徐世勣歸順唐高祖。高祖稱他為「純臣」，封曹國公、英國公，賜姓李。後避唐太宗李世民的諱，去「世」字，就是兵法上赫赫有名的李勣。
李勣常謂人：「我年十二三時為亡賴賊，逢人則殺。十四五為難當賊，有所不愜則殺人。十七八為佳賊，臨陳乃殺之。二十為大將，用兵以救人死。」但也有他很貼心的一面。
