1965年8月7日，杜进才与拉惹勒南抵达吉隆坡，才惊觉新加坡将脱离马来西亚，两人拒签分家协议，直到东姑亲笔信说明已无回头路，才忍痛妥协。
8月8日，三位部长奔赴各地，向党员说明真相。李光耀也连夜回新加坡部署一切，而英国驻马最高专员意外获悉分家计划，要求延后24小时，却遭东姑拒绝。

8月8日晚上人民入睡时，仍然是马来西亚公民。一场不流血的政变悄然落幕，一个新国家即将诞生，新加坡的命运也因此被彻底改写。
