Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#53 - Davy Gomez // Editor
Q: What advice do you have for someone building a reel that stands out?
Make it feel like you, keep it short (around 70 seconds), foreground your editing instincts, and include a link to full pieces so decision-makers can see the breadth of your capability, not just a few shots.
#53 - Davy Gomez // Editor
Q: What is the difference between online and offline editing?
Offline is the low-resolution, flexible stage where editors assemble the story; online involves conforming to high-res footage, coordinating with color, VFX, and audio, and ensuring the final cut matches the reference exactly.
#53 - Davy Gomez // Editor
Q: How did you get started in this industry?
After film school and a stint in Miami, I moved to New York, started in camera and assistant roles, and gradually moved into editing after taking on an opportunity to cut a project with a cracked Premiere setup. That scramble led to more editing work, then online editing at Vice and Complex before transitioning to long-form TV editing on The Bear.
#52 - Dan Kanes // CEO, Atlas Lens Co.
Q: How did you get into the industry and start Atlas Lens Co.?
I started with curiosity and DIY tinkering, moved from lighting on sets to building my own lens concepts, and used a mix of frugality, collaboration, and listening to the community to develop products that solve real on-set problems.
#50 - Alex Chou // Photographer & Digitech
Q: How did you transition from photographer to Digitech on set?
I started as a photographer, learned Capture One, and got connected with a videographer who needed a Digitech. The role grew from doing the computer work to collaborating with the photographer to shape the shoot, manage color, and keep clients engaged.
