  • Dropping Quality

I’ve been a long-time listener of the BBC World Business Report, but the quality has declined in recent years. The range of stories feels narrower and the reporting less sharp than it used to be. I’ve now switched to Bloomberg’s Daybreak Europe Pod, which offers a much wider range of global business stories for me.

  • Absolutely terrible reporting

As someone who has both US and UK nationality and has lived in both countries, this show demonstrates the legit toffiest worst of the English. No, it is not “interesting” that the US is considering a budget bill that takes health insurance away from the poor to give tax cuts to the wealthiest. The oh look at those Americans over there how curious (read stupid because not British) is so incredibly tired. Seriously, Mike Johnson get a grip: you ask the stupidest questions, arrive at the stupidest ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Powell says he will stay on as Federal Reserve Governor
Q: What do you think of Powell staying on as governor in light of politics?
The panel suggests it helps avoid politically motivated pressure on the Fed and preserves regulatory and policy stability during a transition, while keeping doors open for future leadership decisions.
Oil hits new highs - how bad will it get?
Q: What sparked the spike in oil prices today?
A combination of Iran-related statements and thin liquidity around the June Brent futures contract, which caused exaggerated price action before prices cooled as liquidity improved.
How will leaving OPEC impact the UAE's oil production?
Q: How might Saudi Arabia respond given its role as a price and production balancer?
Saudi Arabia could either maintain a stabilizing role with fewer tools, or also monetize its own resources more aggressively, potentially leading to increased competition and less centralized market management.
How will leaving OPEC impact the UAE's oil production?
Q: You called it a blow for OPEC. What difference will it make?
The UAE will likely pursue higher output when allowed, reducing dependence on quotas, which could loosen OPEC's control over supplies if others follow and if spare capacity is not tightly managed by a central authority.
United Arab Emirates is quitting the Opec and Opec+
Q: What will it do then? Will it increase its production? And if it does, does that mean lower prices?
Over the longer term, increased UAE production could push oil prices lower, provided the move is accompanied by normalizing conditions in key chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz.
