  • Dropping Quality

I’ve been a long-time listener of the BBC World Business Report, but the quality has declined in recent years. The range of stories feels narrower and the reporting less sharp than it used to be. I’ve now switched to Bloomberg’s Daybreak Europe Pod, which offers a much wider range of global business stories for me.

  • Absolutely terrible reporting

As someone who has both US and UK nationality and has lived in both countries, this show demonstrates the legit toffiest worst of the English. No, it is not “interesting” that the US is considering a budget bill that takes health insurance away from the poor to give tax cuts to the wealthiest. The oh look at those Americans over there how curious (read stupid because not British) is so incredibly tired. Seriously, Mike Johnson get a grip: you ask the stupidest questions, arrive at the stupidest ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

UK bans trade with Israeli West Bank settlements
Q: Will these measures widen beyond the West Bank to affect the wider UK-Israel trade relationship?
Yes, there is a strong likelihood of broader regulatory burdens and potential shifts in import/export licensing, which could affect thousands of UK-linked businesses that trade with Israel and undermine existing trade agreements.
UK bans trade with Israeli West Bank settlements
Q: Megan, in purely economic terms, how significant are these sanctions? Will it be felt by the Israel economy?
The effect is currently unclear on the overall Israel-UK trading relationship, with most of the impact concentrated on goods from illegal settlements; the broader trade and regulatory environment is likely to become more complex and carry costs for various sectors, including food and pharmaceuticals.
Is AI a threat to humanity?
Q: So what would actually be in this treaty?
The treaty would aim to create a safe, regulated environment for AI development with a clear human understanding of risks, enabling deployment decisions to be made in the broader marketplace rather than under a blanket ban.
Thousands to be laid off as Europe's car industry suffers
Q: How serious are the problems facing Europe's carmakers and what role does China play?
The panel explains that European auto manufacturers are under significant pressure from higher costs, tariff environments, and aggressive Chinese entrants; cost-cutting, capacity adjustments, and strategic reorientation are required to stay competitive; timelines for product cycles are longer than China's rapid development, so Europe needs to accelerate efficiency and electrification moves.
Hormuz Oil Flows Recover
Q: One last question for you, Nicholas, and it's about investors. are they watching the Fed with inflation proving stubborn? And what are the markets expecting on interest rates?
The market is pricing in rates remaining unchanged for now, despite stubborn inflation and low unemployment, with potential for changes only if the economic signals shift.
