  • Dropping Quality

I’ve been a long-time listener of the BBC World Business Report, but the quality has declined in recent years. The range of stories feels narrower and the reporting less sharp than it used to be. I’ve now switched to Bloomberg’s Daybreak Europe Pod, which offers a much wider range of global business stories for me.

  • Absolutely terrible reporting

As someone who has both US and UK nationality and has lived in both countries, this show demonstrates the legit toffiest worst of the English. No, it is not “interesting” that the US is considering a budget bill that takes health insurance away from the poor to give tax cuts to the wealthiest. The oh look at those Americans over there how curious (read stupid because not British) is so incredibly tired. Seriously, Mike Johnson get a grip: you ask the stupidest questions, arrive at the stupidest ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Luxury fashion houses bag a return to sales growth
Q: How important is China as a market to these luxury companies currently?
Experts note that China remains a major growth engine but is now more mature, with cautious consumer behavior and rising appeal for local brands; growth is not as explosive as before, and luxury players are adapting to a more balanced, diversified set of growth drivers including regional markets and jewelry momentum.
Is the World Cup up for sale?
Q: What is the role of public regulation in this issue?
Experts argue that public regulation is necessary to curb FIFA's conflated roles as regulator and major profit-seeker, ensuring fair ticket pricing, balanced competition, and welfare for athletes, rather than allowing market forces alone to dictate football's governance.
Is the World Cup up for sale?
Q: What is the core concern about FIFA selling part of its commercial business?
The core concern is that selling a stake in FIFA's commercial arm could concentrate power back into the hands of a small group of decision-makers, undermine governance, and reduce transparency, while promising large payouts to member associations without clear accountability on where the money goes.
Petrol and gasoline prices set to go higher
Q: Nicholas, tell us the worst. Where are we at the moment?
Oil remains elevated with crude around $100+ per barrel as markets weigh supply disruptions and demand dynamics, while airlines report higher fuel costs eating into profits.
Trump targets trade partners with new wave of tariffs
Q: What practices are the tariffs targeting under Section 301?
They are aimed at addressing unfair trading practices, including forced labor standards, which the US contends other countries have not enforced, in order to justify broad tariff actions.
