  • Dropping Quality

I’ve been a long-time listener of the BBC World Business Report, but the quality has declined in recent years. The range of stories feels narrower and the reporting less sharp than it used to be. I’ve now switched to Bloomberg’s Daybreak Europe Pod, which offers a much wider range of global business stories for me.

The oh look at those Americans over there how curious (read stupid because not British) is so incredibly tired. Seriously, Mike Johnson get a grip: you ask the stupidest questions, arrive at the stupidest ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Japan's currency hit its weakest level in nearly 40 years
Q: What would currency intervention look like in practice, and is it effective long-term?
The consensus is that intervention would be temporary and not a lasting fix, and policymakers expect markets to ultimately reflect broader fundamental factors rather than a one-off intervention.
Japan's currency hit its weakest level in nearly 40 years
Q: Why raise rates at all when some economies did not?
Experts argue the shock from the conflict and second-round effects in labor markets justify action to prevent more entrenched inflation, with June's 25 basis point hike viewed as a prudent step to position for future policy moves.
Japan's currency hit its weakest level in nearly 40 years
Q: What message would you give to households regarding upcoming price pressures?
The hosts discuss that inflation is hurting households, with energy and food costs driving up consumer prices, and emphasize the importance of central banks communicating a careful, data-driven path to bring inflation back to target.
America at 250: swifties and soccer fans turn up
Q: Is the World Cup living up to expectations for tourist numbers in New York?
The hotel sector saw a bump, but not as large as anticipated, with English fans and other groups driving some activity; overall, the gains are real but not as explosive as forecasts.
SpaceX's lift-off moment stalls
Q: What is SpaceX's influence on the Nasdaq 100 now that it's included?
Its impact is relatively modest in weighting, but it triggers broader reallocations by funds and changes how investors view the index structure, especially given SpaceX's high stock price.
