  • Fills the gaps

Really enjoyed this podcast as well as learned so much. Educated in the 70s/80s my knowledge of English/British history has been Tudor, Victorian and WW2. Listening from the beginning I now have a far better understanding of my own history and in a wider context. Also Charlie is a very entertaining voice.

  • Cnut

Cnut’s sister, Estrid, did not marry Robert of Normandy and was not the mother of William the Conqueror. Estrid married Ulf Jarl and was mother of the danish king Sven Estridssen. Ulf had a sister Gytha, married to Earl Godwin and thus mother of the last anglosaxon king, Harold Godwinson.

  • HECK YEA I’M ALL IN

Hey y’all! I’m a proud wife and (quite a cutie) mother of twins BUT UNFORTUNATELY I AM FROM TEXAS 🤬🥲

Please don’t hold that against me! lol All I can say is that I have loved history, especially English history since I was fortunate enough to go to Europe for 16 days the summer before I went into eighth grade. I went to 8 countries in 16 days around 1995.

I have never felt so connected to actual history of the time when I passed out in the Colosseum because of heat, exhaustion, saw a ghost... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mary, Queen Of Scots
Q: What was the nature of the Mary-Elizabeth relationship as portrayed in the discussion, and what evidence supports that view?
The discussion emphasizes that they were not mortal enemies from the start; there were moments of potential reconciliation and mutual understanding, supported by documentary evidence that Mary sought a peace pact on several occasions, and that early perceptions of inveterate enmity emerged from later narratives and political agendas.
Mary, Queen Of Scots
Q: When Mary comes down to England, what were the options and why did she decide to plead with Elizabeth?
She believed she could appeal to Elizabeth's sense of shared monarchic duty, seek asylum, and possibly regain a governing role with limited powers, but ultimately Elizabeth's advisers perceived a continued threat and opted to keep Mary under tight control rather than restore her to power.
Book Companion - Elizabeth I - Part 1
Q: So did she have a lot to kind of turn around after Mary? How unpopular was Mary actually at the time?
Tracy notes Mary's reign was brief and divisive, with Bloody Mary's reputation tied to her religious persecution; Elizabeth faced the challenge of restoring stability while navigating Protestant-Catholic tensions and public perception, ultimately building a more durable regime.
Book Companion - Elizabeth I - Part 1
Q: I mean, what was it about Elizabeth that so inspired you and obviously still does inspire you?
Tracy explains Elizabeth's status as an underdog who defied expectations, her ability to turn gendered assumptions to her advantage, and how she became a symbol of national identity and female leadership, which inspired subsequent generations of historians and readers.
Book Companion - Henry VII
Q: How did Henry VII manage the threat from pretenders like Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, and what does that tell us about his leadership style?
He combined decisive military action when necessary with pragmatic mercy, using clemency for Simnel and a controlled, strategic response to Warbeck, which deterred further rebellions while maintaining legitimacy and avoiding civil war anew.
