  • Fills the gaps

Really enjoyed this podcast as well as learned so much. Educated in the 70s/80s my knowledge of English/British history has been Tudor, Victorian and WW2. Listening from the beginning I now have a far better understanding of my own history and in a wider context. Also Charlie is a very entertaining voice.

  • Cnut

Cnut’s sister, Estrid, did not marry Robert of Normandy and was not the mother of William the Conqueror. Estrid married Ulf Jarl and was mother of the danish king Sven Estridssen. Ulf had a sister Gytha, married to Earl Godwin and thus mother of the last anglosaxon king, Harold Godwinson.

  • HECK YEA I’M ALL IN

Hey y’all! I’m a proud wife and (quite a cutie) mother of twins BUT UNFORTUNATELY I AM FROM TEXAS 🤬🥲

Please don’t hold that against me! lol All I can say is that I have loved history, especially English history since I was fortunate enough to go to Europe for 16 days the summer before I went into eighth grade. I went to 8 countries in 16 days around 1995.

I have never felt so connected to actual history of the time when I passed out in the Colosseum because of heat, exhaustion, saw a ghost... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Book Companion - William & Mary - Part 2
Q: Can you talk us through exactly how the Bill of Rights works and how it becomes the constitution, especially in relation to limiting the monarch's powers?
The Bill of Rights is framed as limiting royal prerogative codes, establishing due process, and preventing taxation without Parliament; it set the stage for a constitutional monarchy, though it was more a product of its time than a modern universal rights document, with later developments like the Act of Settlement reinforcing parliamentary supremacy.
Book Companion - William & Mary - Part 1
Q: Was it glorious? And was it really a revolution?
The guest explains that while there was violence in some parts, the event is often described as glorious and largely bloodless in England, yet more contentious in Ireland and Scotland, and that it also represents a political revolution where Parliament asserts control, leading to a constitutional monarchy.
Book Companion - Charles II
Q: Do we know where Charles II stood on religion and how that affected his policies?
Charles II projected a flexible public stance to keep broad support, yet privately his circle and actions—such as aligning with Catholic influences and negotiating religious tolerances—suggest a pragmatic, rather than purely doctrinal, approach to religion.
Book Companion - Charles II
Q: What was so intriguing about Charles II that stood out in his reign?
He navigated a volatile post-Civil War landscape with a mix of charisma, pragmatism, and political caution, balancing efforts to appease Parliament while preserving royal authority, and fostering a lively court culture despite ongoing fiscal and religious tensions.
Book Companion - Oliver Cromwell
Q: Revolutionary England, is that just the Civil War and Cromwell, or something broader?
No, it spans the entire 17th century including political revolutions, social life changes, and later events like the Glorious Revolution, with Cromwell representing a pivotal but contested middle phase.
