Every single time the right, or even center-left, goes ballistic over a "woke" controversy, the slightest bit of investigation shows the scandal is almost entirely bogus. This is not a new phenomenon; it dates back decades. It's an intentional tool used to protect the powerful and preserve the status quo, while further scapegoating and otherizing those who push for political progress. This podcast... more

I can’t tell you how much the Things Fell Apart debunk meant to me as a trans listener. I was so disappointed, especially with how thoughtlessly he platformed rhetoric that puts the people I love and me in danger.

It felt good to hear you guys care. Thank you.

  • Thought provoking

After listening to the episode on the US Men’s hockey team, I finally realised why the incident made me ( and probably many others) so mad. It’s because the patriarchy makes such a big deal about ‘defending women’, but these big guys wouldn’t step up and defend women they claimed to care about, to a man that they don’t know, and who couldn’t retaliate against them without suffering political backlash. So thank you for presenting the evidence, even though it left me seething!

Q: What surprised you most in your research?
She was struck by how quickly a campaign could escalate to a seven- or eight-figure goal, funded by anonymous donors, and how often mainstream outlets re-circulated or minimally covered these efforts unless they intersected with larger, sensational narratives.
WTW128: Crowdfunding Hate, with Naomi Bethune
Q: How do these campaigns typically spread and who is involved?
Her reporting shows a spectrum of donors from casual supporters to white supremacist networks; social media amplification and targeted outreach through accounts that promote racist ideologies help these campaigns go viral and sustain themselves.

Q: What is Matt Murphy's role and credibility in this discussion?
The hosts probe Murphy's leadership of a nonprofit network and scrutinize fundraising practices, implying concerns about transparency and accountability, while giving him space to explain his mission.
WTW111: Antifa Is Good and Effective, Actually
Q: What is the role of journalism in lifting up Antifa?
Mathias stresses the importance of acknowledging that Antifa is a real movement, countering narratives that dismiss its existence, especially in the context of far-right violence.
WTW111: Antifa Is Good and Effective, Actually
Q: How has Antifa evolved since Charlottesville?
Mathias comments that most Americans initially had a dim understanding of Antifa before 2017, but the rise of the far right made Antifa more visible.
