  • A National Treasure

Mead is the best podcaster on current events in the business today. The episode on June 6, a broadcast of his presentation at LSE, showed why. He discussed Trump’s approach to foreign policy by analyzing Trump’s behavior, without making any assumptions about whether Trump is “good” or “bad.” Those are assumptions that most other commentators do make. And if you start out with those assumptions, you don’t clearly see or understand what’s actually happening. Mead always provides clarity.

  • Runs hot or cold

Mead can show truly insightful high-level informed perspective on global international relations. But he can also drift into drivel, as his overview of his generation’s course since the late 60s today shows: truly superficial, missing so many important elements, and just comfortably settling into homilies about goodwill and such. I urge him to be more careful in avoiding softball generalities, that is not why we listen to him! Appreciate the show, nevertheless.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

US Foreign Policy in the Age of Trump
Q: What is the most important mental model for understanding Trump's behavior in foreign policy?
Treat his actions as driven by drama, coalition management, and opportunistic bargaining rather than by consistent policy aims; this helps explain why seemingly contradictory moves occur and how he mobilizes both domestic and international audiences.
A Visit to Ukraine
Q: Walter, you were in Ukraine last week, your third trip since the full-scale invasion in 2022, and you wrote about your three main impressions from this latest trip to Ukraine. Tell us about those.
Mead describes witnessing the evolution of warfare on the ground, including intensive volunteer efforts and a renewed unity in Ukraine beyond party lines, while noting how drone warfare and real-time feedback are reshaping military thinking and logistics.
25 Years of Putin
Q: Walter, is this news or photos?
Mead argues the Kremlin's security measures reflect genuine concern about internal dynamics and potential coups, indicating a real and evolving threat landscape rather than mere sensationalism.
25 Years of Putin
Q: Walter, is this news or faux news?
Mead suggests the Trump administration is pursuing a strategic, perhaps cautious, retrenchment and regulatory balance on AI rather than an unbounded rollout, signaling a complex policy landscape rather than a one-sided narrative.
What Orbán Meant
Q: Walter, is this news or faux news?
The hosts acknowledge the news is real and timely, noting it could be more significant if manufacturing stakeholders speak more openly, but it signals a dangerous trend toward expanded defense production.
