  • I usually like this

I tried listening to the episode about Lindbergh. It was just too campy with all the silly music. Why are you treating us like we're idiots.

  • My Favorite Podcaster

After listening to all of Eli Lake’s fascinating Re-Education podcasts, there was a hiatus during which I feared losing access to his wonderful work. Then he became a writer at TFP and Breaking History began.

Eli’s journalism seems effortless. Nothing he writes (or thinks) is forced or hackneyed. His work has thus an organic, fresh quality free of ideological jargon and partisan hypocrisy. Well-connected, honest, and magnanimous in debate, I marvel at the grit and courage behind his generosity ... more

  • A gifted and patient thinker

Eli is a professional, that’s all I can say. When dealing with people that have me shouting in anger, he has the ability to deftly choose the right points to push back on, even with people who as they spout their ignorant conspiracy ideas (while admitting they actually don’t know anything about the topic). Plus, he knows his hip-hop.

  • Masterclass in Debate & Storytelling

Eli’s ability to deftly & cordially debate Sullivan and Wright for hours as they deployed their intellectual insincerity and mental gymnastics to defend the Iranian regime is a true masterclass. It can be summed up in my favorite line from the Wright episode: “Yes, of course Death to America was not in the Quran. It was written in the 8th century”, “So you concede” ☠️😅🙄

I’ve also thoroughly enjoyed Eli’s storytelling ability in the history narrative episodes as well. Great podcast!

  • Eli Lake interview with Robert Wright

Eli demonstrates the patience of a saint with this man. Wright cannot argue a single salient point, but Eli is cordial all the way through it. I couldn’t care less about anything that Wright can offer in this program, but it is a masterclass in how to carry on a conversation with a complete moron and not lose the thread of your own argument.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Roald Dahl: Genius and Bigot
Q: Can we separate good art from the flawed person who created it?
Yes, the hosts argue, recognizing that great works can endure independently, but we should confront and understand the artist's flaws rather than erase them entirely.
What the Founders Really Meant to Say
Q: How does your view differ from the traditional emphasis on taxes as the central driver of rebellion?
Parkinson argues that while taxes mattered, the broader context—the balance of power, representation, and the protection of ordered liberty—was central. The grievances frame a systemic concern about executive overreach and the structure of government, not merely taxation.
When ‘Good Kids’ Go Radical: A Breaking History Special
Q: What parallels are drawn between Walsh and Ulrike Meinhof?
Both figures illustrate how educated, privileged individuals can pivot toward militant and revolutionary identities, with Walsh representing a faster, younger arc and Meinhof illustrating a long arc from journalist to terrorist, shaping the discussion about off-ramps and indoctrination.
When ‘Good Kids’ Go Radical: A Breaking History Special
Q: Who is Calla Walsh and why is she in Lebanon?
Walsh is a young activist who radicalized rapidly—from local Democratic politics and Cuba trips to alignment with various international revolutionary networks, and now operates as a propagandist for Iran's axis from Lebanon.
Modern Terrorism Was Born in the 1970s
Q: How did the 1970s shape contemporary terrorism?
The 1970s was a critical moment for modern terrorism, with many young people turning to extreme actions for social change against the backdrop of revolutionary ideologies.
