Judgey and I feel far less intelligent having listening to an episode. Horrible.

  • Long time listener, first time reviewer

I’ve been listening for years and never felt the need to write a review, but when I heard the episode on How to talk to kids about Minneapolis, I had to thank you for taking a leap and writing about really hard stuff. Your guest gave some great practical tips. You two are gems and I love the balance of seriousness and levity in What Fresh Hell.

  • Favorite parenting podcast

This podcast gives wonderful information to help with parenting but never in a judgmental way. I love that they understand neurodivergence and how that takes parenting to a whole different level, so their advice is always practical, not impossible.

  • always look forward to this every week!

I have been listening to Margaret and Amy for years now since my kids were toddlers and they are now tweens 😩. they are so funny and cover all sorts of interesting topics and I love the research they do and the comedy sketches that are usually towards the end of the episodes. Highly highly recommend— they really do feel like awesome friends that keep you company amidst the stresses (and humorous moments) of parenting.

Fresh Take: Talia Kovacs on How to Teach Kids Resilience
Q: How does spirituality fit into resilience for kids and families?
Spirituality, distinct from religion, helps kids feel connected to something larger—whether through nature, the universe, or a sense of meaning—which correlates with lower anxiety and higher resilience according to meta-analyses and research discussed in the episode.
Fresh Take: Talia Kovacs on How to Teach Kids Resilience
Q: Can you walk us through the resilience framework you teach?
The framework starts with the parent's own resilience, then creates the right home conditions, including independent play and recognizing each child's strengths, and finally builds kids' capacity by giving them opportunities to fail and solve problems on their own while preserving a safety net.
Fresh Take: Talia Kovacs on How to Teach Kids Resilience
Q: So tell us first of all, we want to make sure we all know what we're talking about. How do you define resilience?
Resilience is the ability to take positive action and make the next best choice until you're okay again, showing that resilience can be learned rather than being an innate trait.
Fresh Take: Sara Hirsh Bordo on Autoimmunity and the Threat to Women's Health
Q: And explain the ACE questionnaire and how it came to be part of this study.
The ACE questionnaire, Adverse Childhood Experiences, was used to explore how childhood trauma relates to health later in life. Bordo explains that experiences in girlhood—like caregiver roles and restricted permission—can influence adult health, and she layered additional questions to capture gender-specific experiences to better understand autoimmune risk.
Fresh Take: Sara Hirsh Bordo on Autoimmunity and the Threat to Women's Health
Q: So Sara, let's start at the very beginning. For people who are not familiar with the term, what is autoimmunity?
Autoimmunity is a broad class of diseases where the immune system attacks the body's own cells, there is no cure for any of them, and awareness around who is affected is predominantly women. The discussion also covers common conditions like Hashimoto's, celiac, rheumatoid arthritis, and more, illustrating the scope and gender skew.
