  • Judgey and Uneducated

Judgey and I feel far less intelligent having listening to an episode. Horrible.

  • Long time listener, first time reviewer

I’ve been listening for years and never felt the need to write a review, but when I heard the episode on How to talk to kids about Minneapolis, I had to thank you for taking a leap and writing about really hard stuff. Your guest gave some great practical tips. You two are gems and I love the balance of seriousness and levity in What Fresh Hell.

  • Favorite parenting podcast

This podcast gives wonderful information to help with parenting but never in a judgmental way. I love that they understand neurodivergence and how that takes parenting to a whole different level, so their advice is always practical, not impossible.

  • always look forward to this every week!

I have been listening to Margaret and Amy for years now since my kids were toddlers and they are now tweens 😩. they are so funny and cover all sorts of interesting topics and I love the research they do and the comedy sketches that are usually towards the end of the episodes. Highly highly recommend— they really do feel like awesome friends that keep you company amidst the stresses (and humorous moments) of parenting.

Meredith Schwartz on Building a Reading Life You Actually Love
Q: What practical steps can listeners take to build a consistent reading life?
Know your reader type, keep a broad but curated list of options, try a book flight to test new genres, and use multiple formats to fit different moments in the day.
Meredith Schwartz on Building a Reading Life You Actually Love
Q: Why is it worthwhile to read fiction during times when world events feel overwhelming?
Fiction offers a way to unplug and give your brain a rest, which ultimately restores energy and clarity for when you return to more pressing matters.
DEEP DIVE: Donna Jackson Nakazawa on Helping Our Daughters Thrive
Q: Can you walk us through the brain science behind why puberty affects girls differently than boys?
Donna explains that estrogen acts as a master regulator during puberty, increasing the brain's stress response and influencing neural wiring. In girls, earlier puberty can amplify sensitivity to chronic, unpredictable stress, leading to heightened risk for anxiety and depression unless coping systems, support networks, and safety cues are in place.
Fresh Take: Michaeleen Doucleff, DOPAMINE KIDS
Q: What is the core misunderstanding about dopamine that most parenting advice misses?
Dopamine is not about pleasure itself but about motivation and prediction; the brain seeks out cues that predict reward, which can lead to chasing endless consumption unless environments are redesigned to promote healthier, satisfying alternatives.
Fresh Take: Michaeleen Doucleff, DOPAMINE KIDS
Q: Michaeleen, how did you realize your own relationship with screens was affecting you and your daughter?
While at the beach with her daughter, Michaeleen realized she preferred looking at her phone to being present, which sparked her exploration of how screens and dopamine influence behavior and mood.
