Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

6/4/26 - 40th Anniversary Special- Actor Alan Arkin
Q: Can you share a moment from your childhood that shaped your understanding of acting and the craft?
I described observing a distraught friend being comforted by my mother, realizing early on that emotion in performance can reveal or conceal truth, and that my own responses as a child were a doorway into an ongoing study of authenticity in performance.
6/4/26 - 40th Anniversary Special- Actor Alan Arkin
Q: How would you compare the satisfaction you get from writing to the satisfaction from acting or directing?
Writing provides a different kind of fulfillment than acting or directing; it allows me to express intellectual ideas and to puncture the self, whereas acting is often about emotional expression and presence. Both are vital, but writing feels immeasurably different in its scope and its ability to communicate ideas.
6/4/26 - 40th Anniversary Special- Actor Alan Arkin
Q: Mr. Arkin, what led you to the decision to write a memoir, given your initial sense that you hadn't planned to write one?
I started writing about experiences that felt essential and transformative, particularly the workshops I teach, and those moments grew into a broader life narrative. It wasn't a planned memoir from the start, but the material demanded to be recorded as part of my ongoing exploration of craft and devotion.
6/3/26. 40th Anniversary Special - Friday Night Lights
Q: What drew you to Odessa, Texas as the setting for your book, and how did you approach reporting there?
I chose Odessa for its remoteness and its stark boom-and-bust economics, which amplified football's central role. I immersed myself in the town, attending practices and meetings to gain authentic insight, and I confronted the uncomfortable realities of racism and intense parental pressure, treating the subject with the seriousness of ethnography.
6/8/26. "The First All-Star Game" / "The Arm"
Q: Why is the story of pitching injuries and Tommy John surgery so pivotal to understanding modern baseball?
Passan outlines how the arm has become the sport's most valuable asset yet remains poorly understood, with surgeries like Tommy John offering partial solutions but also creating extended rehabilitation timelines and long-term risk, reshaping how teams value player health.
