For Erin, surfing is integral to her identity, shaping her relationships and experiences. She recalls the importance of being in beautiful places and the personal connections made through surfing, reflecting on how it captures the essence of life and identity.
WRITING SURFING INTO LIFE, WITH ERIN HORTLE
Q: Can you just really quickly for us describe what was Nigel and what did he end up getting up to in his life?
Nigel was a gannet who lived alone on a small island designed for conservation efforts, becoming known as 'Nigel No Friends' because he interacted with concrete replicas intended to attract other birds. His story raises questions about involvement and responsibility in conservation.
DID ANYONE MAKE YOU A KILLER WETSUIT?
Q: What's your relationship with wetsuits, like personally?
I've had over 50 wetsuits over the years and rely on them heavily for surfing in the winter.
SURFING COWGIRLS UNITE!
Q: Why do you think we need to put on a festival that's specifically aimed at women in the surf culture?
It provides a space for women to meet, learn about guest speakers, and celebrate women's contributions to a historically male-dominated industry.
SURFING COWGIRLS UNITE!
Q: Is there a type of person who naturally takes to surfing?
It's hard to say; individuals can surprise you as surfing differs from other sports and one's physicality doesn't always determine success.
