  • Good content but it’s too quiet

This podcast sounds like whispers compared to the other podcasts I listen to. I can barely make out what they’re saying over the rumble of the road while I’m driving. I can’t turn up the volume because once this podcast and the next one ends up being really loud.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Vermont landlord pursues debts from tenants. His wife now helps write eviction law
Q: What did your team find in the court records regarding debt collection and eviction actions?
Records show persistent pursuit of unpaid rent and damages, with many judgments issued, sometimes tied to high interest, and a few cases where tenants were involved in disputes over habitability and deposits.

Q: How does Representative Dolgin view her dual role as landlord and legislator?
She says there is no conflict of interest, views her real-life landlord experience as a policy asset, and believes the House-passed rent-related bill does not sufficiently rebalance Vermont's rental laws toward landlords.
A Vermont landlord pursues debts from tenants. His wife now helps write eviction law
Q: Can you start us off with some backstory here? Who are the Dolgins?
The Dolgins are a landlord-and-spouse duo involved in a rental business, with Debbie Dolgin serving as a first-term state representative on the housing committee; Steve Dolgin handles property management and has a track record of housing policy viewpoints.
Hardwick wrestles with the future of one of its ailing dams
Q: Are there any outside funding sources that the utility or the town could use to get this project done?
Abigail describes a mix of potential funding sources, including about $4 million set aside by state lawmakers, but notes that this is far smaller than the overall removal costs. They would likely need a combination of federal funds, state funds, and fundraising, but money remains a major obstacle.
Hardwick wrestles with the future of one of its ailing dams
Q: So you've been reporting on how this is playing out at Hardwick with one of the dams there. Will you tell us a bit about that dam and what's going on with it?
Abigail explains that the Jackson Dam is an aging, non-powered, concrete structure with a long crack and foundation issues. It has a history of overtopping and is considered a significant hazard, but there is no imminent failure. The core tension is about whether to repair or remove it, given regulatory changes and funding challenges.
