The terminally uncool "pop" programme from the terminally uncool state TV station, BBC1. A recipe for failure, surely. And yet, everyone watched Top of the Pops. Why was that?

In July 1979 Steve Dahl organised a Disco Demolition Night at a baseball game in Comiskey Park, Chicago. Infuriated by disco music and its chart dominance it was the latest in a growing nationwide "Disco Sucks!" campaign. That night ended in a riot. ... more
As a fan of his sombrero fallout podcast, I am so excited that Ian has launched a new one and it does not disappoint! Focused, fascinating music topics considered from different angles- opens up a topic rather than has the last word. Ian’s charm and dry humor carry over here to make vinyl maelstrom a smooth informative 20 minute listen!
I very much enjoy these. I was particularly enchanted by the recent episode about (the history of) jazz and blues with Tony Bishop. Also, I have an obfuscated version of the Unknown Pleasures t-shirt from the 1998 New Order performance at Reading ("Joy Divison: forever"), in which the waveforms are heavily blurred and pixelized. Do I win a prize? :-)
Mr Forth drops his sombrero to offer bite size chunks of musicology, each of which could be the jumping off point for a PhD in modern music. Informative, interesting and accessible.
It's a pity licensing does not permit us to hear the sounds about which we are learning but I wouldn't fallout over that.
If John Peel ever mattered to you, you may haves stumbled upon a wee candle burning.

Succinct summaries of questions about music in culture, e.g. yes, why are there so many female bands these days? Feel fully briefed after the morning commute and able to seem like the smartest person round the water cooler. Delivered with authority but also a dry sense of humour. Great stuff, looking forward to many more. Those musical stings are good fun too.
