Why The Best Sales Rep You Interview Is Probably Your Worst Hire with Mike Heller, Partner @ Floodgate
Q: What should founders look for when deciding whether to hire a founding AE early on and what risks should they consider?
Founders should avoid hiring too early and instead ensure they have a clear product-market fit or the ability to rapidly iterate the go-to-market motion. When hiring a founding AE, the focus should be on credibility with customers, ability to learn quickly, willingness to adapt to ambiguity, and alignment with the long-term vision rather than just past logos or deal sizes.
Why The Best Sales Rep You Interview Is Probably Your Worst Hire with Mike Heller, Partner @ Floodgate
Q: Why did you choose to move from operating roles at Dropbox to advisory work and eventually Floodgate, instead of taking a traditional CRO path?
I was drawn to advisory because it let me meet lots of founders, influence early go-to-market strategy, and learn from a wide range of startups. It wasn't scalable in the way I wanted to grow, so I looped into fractional leadership and VC, where I could leverage my GTM background but still impact early-stage companies in meaningful ways.
Why The Best Sales Rep You Interview Is Probably Your Worst Hire with Mike Heller, Partner @ Floodgate
Q: What made Dropbox's sales culture unique and how did it shape your career path?
Dropbox hired people with natural aptitude for selling and placed them in a hard-selling environment with strong management, which created a powerful learning ground and helped many go on to become top sellers in other companies. The experience showed me the importance of context, mentorship, and the right environment over raw talent alone.
Fewer Reps, More Pipeline: How AI-Native GTM Teams Are Doing More With Less w/ Jason Miller, VP Sales @ Unify
Q: What's the biggest difference you've seen between a PLG org and a sales-led org?
The shift involves going from relying on product-led signals and warm inbound to a structured outbound motion, requiring CRM hygiene, consistent outbound discipline, and tight alignment of top-of-funnel metrics with pipeline goals.
Fewer Reps, More Pipeline: How AI-Native GTM Teams Are Doing More With Less w/ Jason Miller, VP Sales @ Unify
Q: What do you look for in a candidate during interviews, and how do you evaluate coachability?
He emphasizes treating interviews like a sales cycle, looking for thoughtful follow-ups, deeper discovery questions, and evidence of active listening and the ability to push for deeper layers of understanding.
