  • Learn while connecting to authors

I have enjoyed listening to several episodes of the podcast over the past month. I like how they are organized and presented. Not only am I learning from these experts’ recent research, but I also I get to hear directly from the authors themselves about what they found insightful and why they performed their research. I can’t think of another place where a general practitioner like myself would have this opportunity.

This is a GREAT show for people working in the veterinary field (or interested in it) to learn about the great research being done around the world for dogs, cats, horses, and all animals. There is a fantastic focus on one health impacts, and how vet med can learn (and help) human medicine.

The podcast is well organized, with a nice interview style and great co-hosts; I highly recommend listening!

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

A Practical Way To Reduce Venipuncture In Hospitalized Dogs
Q: What practical tips would you give to teams starting to use this technique?
Start with a large, compliant dog; ensure all equipment is ready; use the same catheter for the full 24-hour period; review the associated training video; and expect a short learning curve.
A Practical Way To Reduce Venipuncture In Hospitalized Dogs
Q: How did the PIBC samples compare to venipuncture at a high level?
Overall, PIBC samples were very comparable to venipuncture, even after 24 hours of IV fluids and medications, once proper flushing was used to clear dead space.
A Practical Way To Reduce Venipuncture In Hospitalized Dogs
Q: When you were thinking about this study, what clinical problem were you aiming to solve?
We wanted to find a way to reduce venipuncture for serial blood sampling in hospitalized patients while using a method validated for veterinary patients rather than human data alone.
Rethinking Neurological Exams in Guinea Pigs: Why One Size Doesn’t Fit All
Q: Vishal, what inspired you to study neurologic examinations?
He explains that the project grew from recognizing that guinea pigs have a distinct physiology and behavior, making extrapolation from cats and dogs unreliable, and he emphasizes the need for a validated, species-specific exam approach.
From Habit to Evidence: The Shift in Antibiotic Use for Canine Acute Diarrhea
Q: What is one key takeaway you want listeners to remember from this episode?
There is extensive evidence that antibiotics like metronidazole do not improve outcomes for mild to moderate diarrhea in dogs, and supportive care with hydration, high fiber, and digestible diets is effective and less disruptive to the gut microbiome.
