  • Learn while connecting to authors

I have enjoyed listening to several episodes of the podcast over the past month. I like how they are organized and presented. Not only am I learning from these experts’ recent research, but I also I get to hear directly from the authors themselves about what they found insightful and why they performed their research. I can’t think of another place where a general practitioner like myself would have this opportunity.

This is a GREAT show for people working in the veterinary field (or interested in it) to learn about the great research being done around the world for dogs, cats, horses, and all animals. There is a fantastic focus on one health impacts, and how vet med can learn (and help) human medicine.

The podcast is well organized, with a nice interview style and great co-hosts; I highly recommend listening!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Uveitis in Kittens: FIP or Not?
Q: What is the practical clinical advice for vets when faced with a young cat with anterior uveitis?
Use a syndromic approach: perform a thorough history, fundic exam, and avoid overreliance on serology; consider a trial of topical steroids and monitor response rather than jumping to antiviral therapy or euthanasia based solely on initial impressions.
Uveitis in Kittens: FIP or Not?
Q: What were the key clinical features that helped distinguish the two groups?
Most ophthalmic signs were similar, but seven signs differed, with episcleral hyperemia more common in undifferentiated cases, while fundic changes and rubiosis iridis were more characteristic of FIP-associated uveitis.
Uveitis in Kittens: FIP or Not?
Q: Karen, at a high level, what questions and hypotheses guided the study design?
The researchers hypothesized that despite similar clinical appearances, there would be detectable differences between undifferentiated resolving uveitis and FIP-associated uveitis that could aid differentiation, guiding clinicians in management.
Can Pet Owners Get a Veterinary Appointment? What a Secret Shopper Study Revealed
Q: Simon, for those unfamiliar with what a secret shopper survey is, why use this and what is the approach useful in veterinary medicine?
Secret shopper surveys provide more reliable data by mimicking real client experiences, avoiding recall bias and other limitations of standard surveys, and they help reveal how clients actually encounter the process of seeking veterinary care.
Can Pet Owners Get a Veterinary Appointment? What a Secret Shopper Study Revealed
Q: So Simon, can you start by summarizing the purpose of the study for our listeners?
The study uses a secret shopper approach to mimic real client experiences and assess how easily pet owners can obtain veterinary appointments, focusing on access barriers, wait times, and travel distances across six diverse states to sketch a national picture.
