  • Learn while connecting to authors

I have enjoyed listening to several episodes of the podcast over the past month. I like how they are organized and presented. Not only am I learning from these experts’ recent research, but I also I get to hear directly from the authors themselves about what they found insightful and why they performed their research. I can’t think of another place where a general practitioner like myself would have this opportunity.

This is a GREAT show for people working in the veterinary field (or interested in it) to learn about the great research being done around the world for dogs, cats, horses, and all animals. There is a fantastic focus on one health impacts, and how vet med can learn (and help) human medicine.

The podcast is well organized, with a nice interview style and great co-hosts; I highly recommend listening!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Skipping the Scope: Long-Term Results of HTO for Canine Cruciate Disease
Q: What are the practical takeaways for surgeons considering a meniscal-sparing approach?
Surgeons should weigh the cost and risk of additional procedures against the potential lack of long-term benefit from exploring the joint; not all lesions are clinically significant, and a tailored approach may be appropriate.
Skipping the Scope: Long-Term Results of HTO for Canine Cruciate Disease
Q: How does your study address the limitations of previous research that relied on subjective outcomes?
We used validated owner-reported measures (LOAD and COI) to provide standardized outcomes and reduce reliance on clinician judgment, improving comparability across studies.
Skipping the Scope: Long-Term Results of HTO for Canine Cruciate Disease
Q: What motivated you to look at a meniscal-sparing approach during stifle surgery for cranial cruciate disease?
Clinical experience suggested that many dogs do well after HTO even when the meniscus is not aggressively treated, prompting the question of whether routine exploration adds meaningful benefit beyond subjective impressions.
Cellular Senescence and the Future of Equine Osteoarthritis Management
Q: What major findings emerged in terms of cell populations and senescence in OA joints?
Gamma delta T cells and dendritic cells showed notable involvement, with senescence signals varying by tissue compartment, indicating a complex, stage-specific immune landscape in OA.
Cellular Senescence and the Future of Equine Osteoarthritis Management
Q: Sticking with methodology, why did you choose single cell RNA-seq to reveal these patterns compared to bulk transcriptomics?
Single cell RNA-seq allows deconvolution of cellular heterogeneity in OA joints, revealing cell-type specific senescence signals that bulk approaches would miss, enabling better understanding of immune cell dynamics.
