  • I look forward to every episode

Though not Jewish, nor even a resident of Phoenix, I treasure the learning that is shared on the podcast. Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz brings great thinkers to share their wealth of knowledge and wisdom with the congregation. I love the interaction with the audience at the end of the lectures.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Stranger In A Strange Land
Q: Was there any part of Egyptian life or society that was worthy of imitating, or was it all so bad?
The speaker indicates that while the Torah presents Egypt as a negative backdrop, the focus is on learning from its failures to create a society that avoids those flaws, rather than endorsing Egyptian practices.
Stranger In A Strange Land
Q: Question Rabbi, is there any sense that part of the need to go to Egypt was to learn the opposite?
Yes, the discussion suggests that the experience in Egypt was meant to teach what a just society should not be—contrasting corrupt power, lax sexual ethics, and concentrated wealth with the Torah's ideals of dignity for workers, modesty of religious authority, and social empathy.
What Animals Teach Us About Families: Kinship and Species in the Bible and Rabbinic Literature
Q: Can you comment on the issue of purity and impurity in relation to animal family laws, particularly in the birds' commandment?
Purity and impurity become explicit concerns for the rabbis, making it harder to address with animal-eating laws, and the discussion shows how genealogies and impurity categories influenced rabbinic thinking about animals.
Praying About the Unspeakable: Liturgy and Ritual as Response to Crisis
Q: Rabbi Marx, what do you think makes a prayer work in a way that resonates across different contexts?
It can resonate with similar feelings that other people have in different contexts and places and maybe times.
Defining Justice: Do We Want Equity, Equality, or Revolution?
Q: How do you recommend someone approaches starting this?
One thing that's rising up for me... is just in recognizing that people who seem crazy to you might actually just have the insights of one of these other models.
