  • Fun and Filling!

This podcast gives you the best of both worlds - fun and science together! I really like that the hosts (and their rotating third/fourth) take questions that really have no basis in reality, let alone science, and try to answer them as though they were questions posited in good faith. The hosts are engaging, their banter is easy to follow, and their run time (usually at half an hour) makes for a quick, fun jaunt that adds fun to any day I listen. Definitely recommended!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Vaguely Scientific #196: Different Sounds for Different Creatures
Q: Why do we care if other people like the same kind of food, music or TV shows as we do?
It's rooted in human social behavior, including tribal instincts and the drive to belong, but also in cognitive dissonance where people resist changing beliefs; embracing diverse preferences can strengthen understanding and reduce conflict in groups.
Vaguely Scientific #196: Different Sounds for Different Creatures
Q: Question one this week is, if a tree falls in a forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound scientifically speaking?
The short answer is yes, because the physics of sound involves propagating pressure waves, and the long answer agrees, noting that perception by an observer is what determines whether we label it as sound, with nuances about non-human listeners and potential evidence of sound waves even without a viewer.
Vaguely Scientific #191: Liquid Nitrogen Would Kill Mr. Fantastic
Q: Could elastic Mr. Fantastic or Plastic Man powers work?
The quick answer is no; if everything the characters have ever been depicted doing is assumed, then it doesn't work.
Vaguely Scientific #187: Super Saiyan God Particle
Q: If you are given a paper clip to hide from a detective, where do you hide it?
The answer discusses various strategies for hiding the paperclip, including placing it in a complex appliance or using diversion tactics, and raises the possibility of creative evasion.
Vaguely Scientific #187: Super Saiyan God Particle
Q: What's the physics or thermodynamics behind beam struggles like those in Dragonball?
The discussion involves an exploration of energy dynamics, including kinetic force and thermodynamics concerning fictional energy beams, emphasizing how such interactions would likely lead to massive destruction.
